A ceramic fiber product and method for manufacturing a ceramic fiber product for severe refractory environments. The method includes the steps of saturating a dry ceramic fiber material having an initial thickness with water or a nonbinding aqueous solution and squeezing the wetted ceramic fiber material to a latent compressed state having a thickness less than the initial dry thickness and removing liquid from the ceramic fiber material during the compressing step. The ceramic fiber is made of a material that springs back towards its initial dry thickness after drying. A monolithic ceramic fiber structure made from the ceramic fiber product is also described, as well as a kit for making a ceramic fiber structure and fasteners for attaching the product to a support form of the structure.

A pumpable ceramic fiber composition having, by weight, from about 20% to about 30% of ceramic fiber, from about 5% to about 10% of a sodium silicate binding agent, from at least 1% to less than 5% of a binder migration retarding agent, from about 0.5 to about 2.5% of a viscosity modifying and lubricating agent, and from about 60% to about 70% of a liquid vehicle, preferably water. The pumpable ceramic fiber composition is resistant to deterioration under repeated freezing and thawing cycles.

A method of producing a cast fused silica product includes grinding fused silica particles to have a first particle size and to form an aqueous slurry. A fused silica aggregate is provided having a second particle size greater than the first particle size. A first amount of the aqueous slurry is dried to form dried fused silica particles and the dry fused silica particles are ground to have a third particle size intermediate to the first and second particles sizes. A second amount of the aqueous slurry, the fused silica aggregate and the ground fused silica particles are admixed to form a casting mix.

Method of manufacturing cast fused silica articles

A castable refractory mix composition is disclosed which when fired at a temperature of about 2300.degree. F. will yield a cast refractory article having improved thermal shock resistance and when fired at a higher temperature of about 2750.degree. F. will yield a cast refractory article having improved abrasion resistance. The castable refractory mix composition comprises from about 10 to 15% by weight of an aqueous slip of fine ground fused silica particles, from 25% to 32% by weight of fine alumina particles, from about 55 to 70% by weight of relatively large particle size silican carbide refractory particles, from about 0.015 to 0.04% by weight of a water-soluble wetting agent, and from 0 to about 5% by weight added water.
