A method includes displaying on a display at least one selection option comprising a first selection option and detecting a touch or cursor on the display. Tactile feedback having a first characteristic is provided when the touch or cursor is at a first location associated with the first selection option. Tactile feedback having a second characteristic is provided when the touch or cursor is detected at a second location not associated with the first selection option.

Tactile feedback method and apparatus

The disclosure relates to a system for providing feedback signals to input signals provided to an electronic device is provided. The system comprises: a display; an input device; an input module to detect activation of the input device; and a input module to generate a feedback signal for the electronic device based on signals from the input module. In system, the input device is a transducer. The transducer may be a piezoelectric element and the input module may cause the transducer to vibrate upon receiving an activation signal from the input module.

System and method for generating a feedback signal in response to an input signal provided to an electronic device

A portable electronic device includes a housing with a base. A touch-sensitive input assembly is spaced from and moveable relative to the base and a stopping arrangement limits movement of the touch-sensitive input assembly in the direction of the base. An actuating arrangement including a piezoelectric actuator for selectively receiving an applied voltage to thereby apply a force to the touch-sensitive input assembly. An accelerometer and functional components are housed within the housing. The functional components include a memory and a processor operably connected to the memory, the touch-sensitive input assembly, the piezoelectric actuator, and the accelerometer to monitor signals from the accelerometer and, if a fall is detected, apply a negative voltage to the piezoelectric actuator causing reverse bending of the piezoelectric actuator to permit the stopping arrangement to limit movement of the touch-sensitive input assembly and thereby limit force exerted on the piezoelectric actuator.

Portable electronic device including tactile touch-sensitive input device and method of protecting same

A portable electronic device includes a touch-sensitive display and a piezoelectric actuator disposed and preloaded on a support and arranged to provide tactile feedback to the touch-sensitive display in response to an actuation signal. The touch-sensitive display may be biased toward the piezoelectric actuator to preload the piezoelectric actuator.

A portable electronic device includes a touch-sensitive display and a piezoelectric actuator arranged to provide tactile feedback to the touch-sensitive display in response to an actuation signal. A pad is disposed in alignment with a force sensor such that depression of the touch-sensitive display causes the force sensor to generate a force signal.
