A method of characterization of a coating on a surface such as a paint coating having metallic flakes distributed within such coating. Single and multi-angle models are utilized. The coating is characterized by measurements having components of light reflected by the metal flakes and attenuated on its exit route from the coating, of light scattered in the entering path of the beam as it travels through the coating, of light scattered by the reflected beam on its exit from the coating, of light scattered in the entering path then reflected by the metallic flakes and attenuated in the coating on exiting, and of light scattering in the exit path, both to the metallic flake and reflected by the flake and attenuated on its exit from the coating. Methods of color matching a coating having a metallic flake distribution within the coating are included using reflectance factors and tristimulus values and minimizing the sum of the squares of the deviation between samples.

Color matching and characterization of surface coatings

Coating compositions contain pigment dispersants wherein the dispersant is the polymerization product of (i) an alkyl methacrylate having from 3 to 8 carbon atoms in the alkyl group, (ii) a hardening monomer selected from the group consisting of a styrene, methyl methacrylate, ethyl methacrylate and mixtures thereof, (iii) an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid selected from the group consisting of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, itaconic acid, crotonic acid, maleic acid, fumaric acid and mixtures thereof or a monomer having a double bond alpha-beta to a carbonyl group and which provides carboxyl functionality when reacted with water, alcohol, amine or anhydride, (iv) a monomer having a double bond alpha-beta to a carbonyl group and at least one hydroxyl group or a monomer which provides such groups when further reacted with an acid or an epoxide, and (v) a compound providing an amine or amine salt functional moiety. The dispersants are useful for dispersing pigments in coating compositions containing a wide variety of film-forming resins.

Coating compositions containing pigment dispersants

Pigment dispersants for use in coating compositions wherein the dispersant is the polymerization product of (i) an alkyl methacrylate having from 3 to 8 carbon atoms in the alkyl group, (ii) a hardening monomer selected from the group consisting of a styrene, methyl methacrylate, ethyl methacrylate and mixtures thereof, (iii) an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid selected from the group consisting of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, itaconic acid, crotonic acid, maleic acid, fumaric acid and mixtures thereof or a monomer having a double bond alpha-beta to a carbonyl group and which provides carboxyl functionality when reacted with water, alcohol, amine or anhydride, (iv) a monomer having a double bond alpha-beta to a carbonyl group and at least one hydroxyl group or a monomer which provides such groups when further reacted with an acid or an epoxide, and (v) a compound providing an amine or amine salt functional moiety. The dispersants are useful for dispersing pigments in coating compositions containing a wide variety of film-forming resins.

Pigment dispersants for coating compositions

Polymer containing a plurality of organic sulfonate-containing groups is capable of being dissolved or dispersed in a liquid medium. The polymer is useful as a pigment dispersant and as film-forming polymer in coating compositions.

Sulfonate-containing polymer

A pigment paste suitable for use in cationic electrodeposition is disclosed. The paste contains pigment dispersed in a resinous vehicle which is the reaction product of an epoxy-contaning organic material and an organic tertiary amine acid salt containing blocked isocyanate groups capable of unblocking at elevated temperature.

Process for cationic electrodeposition

A pigment paste suitable for use in cationic electrodeposition is disclosed. The paste contains pigment dispersed in a resinous vehicle which is the reaction product of an epoxy-containing organic material and an organic tertiary amine acid salt containing blocked isocyanate groups capable of unblocking at elevated temperature.
