A breathing circuit of the closed circuit type has improved means for removing water vapor to prevent condensation within the circuit. A dryer is placed in the breathing circuit, downstream of the CO absorber, for removing water vapor from the breathing gases, including that entrained in the breathing gases during passage through the CO absorber. The dryer may utilize a thermoelectric cooling element or a water vapor permeable membrane.

Patient connection apparatus is disclosed for connecting a patient to a respirator or anesthesia machine. The patient connection apparatus includes a nipple for providing an inhalation-exhalation stream, a Y-piece for dividing the inhalation-exhalation stream into an inhalation conduit and an exhalation conduit, a patient conduit for connecting the nipple to the Y-piece, a heat and moisture exchanger disposed in the patient conduit for exchanging heat and moisture with the inhalation-exhalation stream, and a nebulizer connector located between the nipple and the heat and moisture exchanger for connecting the inhalation-exhalation stream to the nebulizer. In another embodiment, the patient connection apparatus includes an inhalation connector arranged downstream of the heat and moisture exchanger for connecting the patient conduit to the nebulizer. In another embodiment, a powder inhalator is provided in connection with the nipple so that powder can be supplied to the patient.

Apparatus for connecting a patient to a breathing device such as a respirator, anesthesia machine or the like is disclosed, including a Y-piece including a patient attachment tube, and a pair of additional attachment tubes adapted for connection to an inhalation tube and an exhalation tube, respectively, and including a bacteria filter disposed within the apparatus and separating the patient attachment tube from the two additional attachment tubes so that gases passing between the patient attachment tube and these two attachment tubes along a predetermined flow path must pass through the bacteria filter. In one embodiment the apparatus includes a partition wall arranged for separating inhaled air and exhaled air during passage through the Y-piece.
