A medical implant device or component thereof comprising a metal substrate and a coating layer structure provided on the substrate. The coating layer structure comprises an outermost layer of a ceramic material. A bonding structure is deposited between the metal substrate and the coating layer structure. The bonding structure comprises a chromium rich layer, which is deposited onto the metal substrate surface and has a higher concentration of chromium than the metal substrate, as well as a gradient layer having a composition gradient from the chromium rich layer towards the surface of the device providing increasing proportions of a gradient material which has structural correspondence with the layer of the coating layer structure that is most adjacent to the bonding structure.

Designed surfaces for use in medical implants or instruments

The present invention relates to a method of producing metal cutting tools with outstanding performance in terms of toughness, wear resistance and resistance to coating delamination. According to the method the inserts are subjected to a stream of water mixed with blasting media under method conditions that result in an Alm&#xe9;n value between 0.5 and 1.

Method of producing metal cutting tools

The present invention discloses coated cutting tool inserts particularly useful for turning of nodular cast iron preferably at high speeds, comprising a cemented carbide substrate comprising from about 5 to about 9 wt-% Co and from about 1 to about 5 wt % cubic carbides and balance WC of 86-94 wt-%, and a coating comprising a first layer of TiCNOwith equiaxed grains, a layer of TiCNOwith a thickness of less than about 10 to about 15 &#x3bc;m with columnar grains, a layer of TiCNOwith a thickness of from about 0.1 to about 2 &#x3bc;m and with equiaxed or plate-like grains, a layer of &#x3b1;-AlOwith thickness from about 3 to about 8 &#x3bc;m, an outer layer of a multilayered structure of TiN+TiC with TiC being the outermost layer and a total thickness of from about 0.5 to about 2 &#x3bc;m and wherein the outer coating layer has been removed in the edge line and on the rake face so that the &#x3b1;-AlOlayer is on top along the cutting edge line and on the rake face and the outer TiC layer is the top layer on the flank face.

Coated cutting tool insert

A cutting tool insert has a cermet body with a Co and/or Ni binder phase and a coating deposited as monolayer or as multiple and/or alternating layers of carbide, nitride or oxide. The coating has a thickness of 21-50 &#x3bc;m, when the inserts have a flat rake face, without or with simple chipbreakers and a Co binder phase, or has a thickness of 10-50 &#x3bc;m, when the inserts have a rake face land with a width of 100-300 &#x3bc;m with an angle of 10-25&#xb0; to the rake face and a Co and/or Ni binder phase. The cermet body has more than 50 vol. % Ti-based carbonitride and less than 15 wt % and more than 6 wt % Co and/or Ni binder phase and a hardness of &#x3e;1650 HV3. The disclosure also relates to the use of the coated cutting tool insert for the machining of cast iron work pieces.

Coated cermet cutting tool and use thereof

A coated cutting tool is composed of one or more layers of refractory compounds of which at least one layer is single-phase &#x3b1;-alumina with a pronounced columnar grain-structure and strong texture in the [300]-direction. The alumina layer is preferably deposited by CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) and the preferred microstructure and texture are achieved by adding a second metal halide, and a texture modifying agent, to the reaction gas. When coated cemented carbide cutting tools according to the invention are used in the machining of steel or cast iron, several important improvements compared to prior art have been observed, particularly in the machining of nodular cast iron.
