A special coding scheme is disclosed for more effectively acquiring a long code and frame timing during a cell search in a CDMA communications system. A code set of length M Q-ary code words including symbols from a set of Q short codes is defined with certain properties. The primary property to be satisfied is that no cyclic shift of a code word yields a valid code word. The other properties to be satisfied are that there is a one-to-one mapping between a long code message and a valid code word, and a decoder should be able to find both the random shift (thereby implicitly finding the frame timing) and the transmitted code word (i.e., its associated long code indication message) in the presence of interference and noise, with some degree of accuracy and reasonable complexity.

Cell searching in a CDMA communications system

A decoder in a communication system using channel optimized vector quantization and including an encoder stores active encoder centroids c corresponding to active indices i, an active index being defined as an index that has a predetermined source probability p >0 of being selected by the encoder for transmission to the decoder, source probabilities p and the bit error rate epsilon to dynamically estimate a decoded vector using a sub-optimal algorithm in which only the most significant contributions are considered.

Decoding method and apparatus

Apparatus, and an associated method, facilitates the efficient utilization of a channel extending between a sending and a receiving station of a digital communication system. A block of symbols to be transmitted by the sending to the receiving station is encoded utilizing a parallel-concatenated encoding technique. Selected encoded versions, or portions thereof, are transmitted by the sending station to the receiving station. The receiving station decodes the signals received thereat. If recovery of the informational content of the block of symbols cannot be effectuated, a request is made to transmit additional encoded versions, or portions thereof, of the block of symbols.
