A method for controlling a valve arrangement for an internal combustion engine, the valve arrangement including a piston arrangement comprising a piston having a piston end portion facing an inlet valve of the valve arrangement. The method includes receiving a signal indicative of a temperature level of an exhaust gas after treatment system and when the signal indicates a temperature level below a predetermined threshold level: advancing an exhaust event of the internal combustion engine; and controlling the piston arrangement for reducing the distance between the piston end portion and the inlet valve before the internal combustion engine assumes an air intake event.

A turbo compound transmission, such as in a heavy duty or medium duty diesel engine, includes a turbo compound turbine to be driven by exhaust gases from an internal combustion engine, and a coupling including a first rotor including a mechanical input drive adapted to be driven by the turbine, and a second rotor including a mechanical output drive. A brake is arranged to brake and limit the rotation of the turbine. The coupling is arranged to decouple when braking with the brake, subjecting the coupling to a torque above a predetermined torque limit. The method includes extending the total opening time of at least one valve type of a deactivated cylinder compared to the opening time of the same valve type when the cylinder is active, the extension of the total opening time being performed such that at least one valve of the type is open at least partly both during a first engine stroke, wherein the piston moves in a direction towards its second end position, as well as during a second consecutive engine stroke, wherein the piston moves in a direction towards its first end position.

In an exhaust valve mechanism for an internal combustion engine the main rocker arm is mounted on a rocker arm shaft for normal valve operation via a cam element. A secondary rocker arm is mounted on the shaft for activation of an exhaust brake mode. The activation is achieved through supply of hydraulic pressure to a piston cylinder arrangement acting between the main and secondary rocker arms. A master piston and a slave piston are connected by a hydraulic-link allowing activation by increased hydraulic pressure. When activating the exhaust gas temperature increasing mode, the master piston is moved to an active position for part of its stroke against the force of a first resilient member. When activating the exhaust brake mode, the master piston is moved the full movement of its stroke against the combined forces of the first resilient member and a second resilient member as active position. The end of the first stroke length defines a position for the master piston allowing activation of an extra valve event.

Each cylinder, with an associated piston, has at least one inlet valve and at least one exhaust valve () for controlling fluid interconnection between the combustion space in the cylinder and an intake system and an exhaust system, respectively. A rotatable camshaft () having a cam curve () is designed to interact with a cam follower () for operation of the exhaust valve () during a first opening and closing phase. The cam curve () is also designed to interact with a second cam follower () during a second opening and closing phase which is phase-offset in relation to the first aforementioned opening and closing phase. This configuration facilitates the cylinder being connected to the exhaust system during the induction stroke, once the exhaust stroke is completed.

Diesel engine with unit injectors and a catalytic converter arranged in the engine exhaust system, for reaction with uncombusted fuel. The injectors have spill valves, which in their closed position build up pressure in the injectors, and needle control valves, which in their closed position keep the needle valves of the injectors closed and which, when they are open, open the needle valves. The unit injectors have pump plungers, which are driven by individual cam elements whit a cam curve shaped so that a pressure is maintained in the injects for so long a period during one cycle that injection of fuel is permitted at least when an associated exhaust valve in the combustion chamber begins to open so late during the expansion stroke and temperature drop, that fuel after injection is not combusted in the cylinder but reaches the catalytic converted uncombusted.
