The present invention relates to a device and a method for packet switching in a cellular radio communication system. Radio stations that have packets to transmit, transmit packets with a particular transmission probability (S,). The fraction of the transmitted packets that are received correctly by the receiving radio station, the so-called throughput fraction (t,), can be calculated. The transmission probability (S,) for a transmitting radio station is continuously updated according to a mapping function (f(a)) that depends on the value of the throughput fraction (t,). According to the invention a mapping function (f(a)), with a derivative with an absolute value less than one, is chosen (,). Starting values of the throughput fraction (t,) are generated (,) and these values are input to the mapping function. Updated values of the transmission probability (S,) are generated (,) by mapping function. The transmitting radio station transmits (,) packets according to the updated transmission probability, whereby a new value of the throughput fraction is generated (,). The method is repeated until the values of the throughput fraction are stable.

Packet switching in a cellular radio communication system

A method and system of adaptive channel allocation in a multi-carrier, multi-slot system is provided. In the method and system a subset of M channels is chosen from a larger set of N channels available for communications on a link. As communications take place on the link, signal quality (C/I) measurements on the channels of the subset of M channels and interference (I) measurements on the channels of the group of N channels are periodically performed. The C/I and I measurements are then used to reconfigure the subset of M channels to reduce co-channel interference on the link.
