Methods and apparatus to reduce stress on lasers in optical transceivers are disclosed. An apparatus comprising a printed circuit board (PCB) having a first side and a second side opposite the first side; and a first stiffener attached to the first side of the PCB; and a photonic integrated circuit (PIC) attached to the first stiffener. The first stiffener is between the PIC and the PCB. The apparatus also includes a second stiffener attached to the second side of the PCB.

Methods and apparatus to reduce stress on lasers in optical transceivers

A heat dissipation system for an optical communications module is provided that includes a cold block on which the optoelectronic components and a lens assembly of an OSA of the module are mounted. The cold block has precisely-controlled mounting surface heights that precisely passively align the lens assembly in directions normal to mounting surfaces of the cold block. The cold block is made of a material of very high thermal conductivity, typically copper, so that heat generated by the optoelectronic components is dissipated into the cold block to maintain the optoelectronic components well below maximum allowable temperatures. In addition, an optical interface device of the OSA has a low-profile and an optical configuration that allows it to be used with a high optical fiber count.

Methods, devices and systems that dissipate heat and facilitate optical alignment in optical communications modules

An optical communication system includes a transceiver with a light source, a transition lens and an optical medium. Each of the light source, the transition lens and the optical medium define a corresponding axis. The light source defines a normal launch axis. The transition lens defines an optical axis. The optical medium defines a longitudinal axis. A relative misalignment from a coaxial alignment of the corresponding axes of at least one the light source, the transition lens and the optical medium is used to reduce a back reflection incident at the light source. Such misalignments can be achieved by one or both of angular adjustments and offsets of the axes.

Optical communication systems and methods for minimizing reflective feedback

Various embodiments of machine vision systems, methods, and devices are disclosed for providing passive alignment of an optical component to an electrical device. One embodiment is a method for passively aligning an optical subassembly to an electrical subassembly. One such method comprises: a machine vision system positioning an optical subassembly relative to an electrical subassembly; the machine vision system capturing an image of the optical subassembly; the machine vision system processing the image to identify an alignment member formed on the optical subassembly; and the machine vision system determining a first position of the optical axis of the optical subassembly based on a second position of the alignment member.

Optical component with a passive alignment member

An optical transceiver and method for bidirectionally communicating optical signals in an optical transceiver involve an optical element that bidirectionally separates incoming and outgoing optical signals of the same wavelength. The optical element can be a diffractive element such as a grating or, alternatively, a partially reflective element such as a transparent block having a thin-film coating.

Single wavelength bidirectional fiber optical link with beam-splitting element

An optics system is provided that is made up of a single diffractive optical element that performs beam collimating, beam splitting, and light blocking functions. The diffractive optical element is made up of a substrate having a first surface comprising an entrance facet and a second surface comprising an exit facet. The first surface comprising the entrance facet performs at least the functions of collimating the beam of light produced by the light source and of tilting the collimated beam in a particular direction. The second surface comprising the exit facet performs at least the functions of splitting the tilted collimated beam into at least two collimated light beams and of blocking unintended light (i.e., one or more mode order groups that are not intended to be used for imaging purposes). By performing all of these functions on different surfaces of a single substrate, an extremely compact optics system having very high optical efficiency and a very high signal-to-noise ratio is realized.

Multi-beam, high efficiency diffractive optics system formed in a single substrate

An optical beam splitter for use in an optoelectronic module and method are provided. The optical beam splitter is configured to split a main beam produced by a laser into at least first and second light portions that have different optical power levels. The first light portion, which is to be coupled into an end of a transmit optical fiber of an optical communications link, has an optical power level that is within eye safety limits and yet has sufficient optical power to avoid signal degradation problems. The optical power level of the first light portion is less than the optical power level of the second light portion. The optical beam splitter is capable of being implemented in a unidirectional or a bidirectional optical link.
