A magnetic write apparatus has a media-facing surface (MFS) and includes an auxiliary pole, coil(s) and a main pole having a pole tip and a yoke. The pole tip occupies part of the MFS. The yoke has a yoke length measured from the MFS in a yoke direction perpendicular to the MFS. The yoke length is less than four microns. The main pole has a total length in the yoke direction and a width in a cross-track direction. The main pole is continuous along the total length. The aspect ratio of the main pole is the total length divided by the width and exceeds one. The main pole includes surface(s) having a nonzero acute flare angle from the MFS. The auxiliary pole is adjacent to the main pole and recessed from the MFS by not more than 1.05 micron. The coil(s) energizes the main pole and have not more than two turns.

Magnetic recording write apparatus having a pole having an aspect ratio greater than one and an auxiliary pole

A magnetic writer includes a high magnetic moment write pole layer on a main write pole, the write pole layer including a proximal end recessed from the air bearing surface, and a Wide Area Track Erasure (WATER) reservoir recessed from the proximal end of the write pole layer and transverse to a longitudinal direction of the main write pole. The write pole layer may be conformal in shape to, but have smaller dimensions relative to, the main write pole, such that a distance between their outer surfaces is generally constant in a flare region. The WATER reservoir width, in a cross-track direction, may be greater than or equal to the maximum width of the main write pole.

A magnetic write apparatus has a media-facing surface (MFS) and includes a main pole, an auxiliary pole, a magnetic separation layer and coil(s). The auxiliary pole is adjacent to the main pole and has an auxiliary pole front surface recessed from the MFS by a first distance. The first distance is nonzero. The magnetic separation layer has a front surface facing the MFS and a back surface opposite to the front surface. The back surface is closer to the MFS than the first distance. The front surface is recessed from the MFS by a second distance that is nonzero. The coil(s) energize the main pole.

A magnetic write apparatus has a media-facing surface (MFS), a pole, side shield(s), a side gap and coil(s) for energizing the pole. The pole includes main and assist portions. The main portion is ferromagnetic, includes a pole tip and includes side surface(s) having a flare angle from the MFS. The pole tip occupies a portion of the MFS. The flare angle is nonzero and acute. The assist portion adjoins the main portion, extends from the main portion in a direction having a component in a cross-track direction, and has a depth of not more than three hundred nanometers. The side shield(s) occupy another portion of the MFS, have a back surface, and are between the assist portion and the MFS. The assist portion is conformal with the back surface of the side shield(s). The side gap is between the main portion of the pole and the side shield(s).

A magnetic write apparatus has a media-facing surface (MFS), a pole, a trailing shield, coil(s) and a write gap between the pole and trailing shield. The pole includes leading and trailing surfaces, a main portion having a first bevel and an additional portion having a second bevel and adjoining the main portion. The first bevel adjoins the MFS and is at a nonzero, acute first bevel angle from a direction perpendicular to the MFS. The second bevel is recessed from the MFS by not more than eighty nanometers, oriented at a second bevel angle from the direction and offset from the first bevel by a taper having a taper angle that is greater than the first bevel angle. The additional portion is at least ten nanometers and not more than sixty nanometers thick as measured from the first bevel.

A magnetic recording transducer for use in a data storage device includes a writer pole with a ABS surface, trailing edge bevel and a trailing shield. The effective throat height of the writer main pole is reduced by the use two gap layers between the writer main pole and the trailing shield. A first gap layer is on and in contact with the writer pole trailing surface, and a second gap layer is on a section of the first gap layer on the writer pole trailing edge bevel, from a point removed from the ABS surface and absent from a part on a section of the first gap layer on the writer pole trailing edge bevel nearest the ABS. A method of fabricating the transducer is also provided.

A method and system for providing a magnetic transducer are described. The magnetic transducer includes a first pole, a write gap, a second pole, a first coil, and a second coil. The first pole has a front portion on which at least a portion of the write gap resides. The second pole includes a split yoke that includes a first portion and a second portion. At least a portion of the first coil resides between the first portion of the split yoke and the first pole. At least a portion of the second coil resides between the second portion of the split yoke and the first pole.

Disclosed is a perpendicular recording head for a hard disk drive. The perpendicular recording head includes a yoke that has a plurality of grooves essentially perpendicular to a magnetic flux that flows in a vertical direction relative to the yoke. The perpendicular grooves inhibit residual magnetism in the vertical direction and enhance yoke domain stability.

A perpendicular recording head for a hard disk drive. The head includes a non-magnetic backside shield that minimizes or eliminates the flow of backside flux through the head. The head can be fabricated by forming a non-magnetic backside shield layer on a main pole. Portions of the backside shield and main pole can be removed to form a tapered pole portion. A non-magnetic write-gap layer and write shield are then formed onto the backside shield and main pole.

A hard disk drive that includes a disk and a head that is separated from the disk by a flying height. The disk drive also includes a circuit that determines the flying height from an equation that uses a third harmonic of a read signal. The read signal includes a data pattern that is a product of a first data pattern and a second data pattern. The resultant data pattern provides a third harmonic with a relatively high magnitude and improved signal to noise ratio.

The method and system provide a perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) head having an air bearing surface (ABS). The PMR head includes first and second poles each having front and back gap regions, a first nonmagnetic insertion layer between the back gap regions, a magnetic pole layer with a front terminating at the ABS, a write gap, shield(s), a second nonmagnetic insertion layer between the second pole back gap region and the shield(s), and coil(s) between the shield(s) and the first pole. The magnetic pole layer terminates between the ABS and the second pole back gap region and has pole angle(s) of at least thirty and not more than fifty degrees. At least part of the magnetic pole layer resides on the second pole. Part of the shield(s) are adjacent to the write gap. Another part of the shield(s) is coupled with the second pole back gap region.

A recording head comprises a write element, including a coil and a dynamic fly-height heater, and two electrical lapping guides. The head also comprises a number of bonding pads including a DFH bonding pad and a shared bonding pad both electrically connected to the dynamic fly-height heater. Each lapping guide defines a circuit between the shared bonding pad and a dedicated bonding pad and each includes a resistive element. The resistive elements of the two lapping guides can be vertically aligned to be used to control a lapping tilt angle when a bar of unfinished heads is lapped. After lapping, a channel is defined into the transducer of the recording head. Forming the channel can remove at least a portion of each lapping guide in order to break the electrical circuit of that guide.

A hard disk drive with a disk that has a servo field with an A servo burst and a B servo burst. The A servo burst has a trimmed erase band. The trimmed erase band can be created by offsetting the write head relative to a burst centerline to reduce the width of the erase band. For example, the write head can be moved toward a centerline of the A servo burst. The offset can be a function of write current and cylinder location of the disk. The offsets are selected so that the resultant burst profiles do not contain a flat minimum portion.
