Methods and apparatus for spectrum coordination are described. A method of spectrum coordination includes a spectrum coordinator receiving a request for shared spectrum from a CRS that the spectrum coordinator supports. The request includes at least one minimum protection requirement. The spectrum coordinator determines protection criteria for the CRS based on the at least one minimum protection requirement received from the CRS. The spectrum coordinator sends the protection criteria for the CRS to a geo-location database for use in assigning shared spectrum to other CRSs that the spectrum coordinator does not support.

Methods and apparatus for spectrum coordination

A shared spectrum manager (SSM) may enable spectrum access for Tier 2 Users (T2Us) and Tier 3 Users (T3Us) while provisioning quality of access (QoA) in a dynamic shared spectrum environment while ensuring sufficient spectrum and interference protection for Tier 1 Users (T1Us). The SSM may enable new user spectrum authorizations by sending, to a regulator, a request for administrative information, and receiving, from the regulator, a policy and user authorization information for at least one user. The SSM may register a T2U with or without contacting the regulator. The SSM may perform quality based admission control by receiving periodic measurements from a master device of each T2U with an active frequency assignment indicating a Quality of Operation (QoO) experienced by the respective T2U, maintaining a map of an effective QoOs for a plurality of T2Us, and categorizing protection contours associated with each of the plurality of T2Us.

Protection mechanisms for multi-tiered spectrum access systems

Methods and apparatuses are described herein for providing a victim database discovery procedure. The victim database discovery procedure may be guided by an initial list of potential victim databases that may be defined by physical properties such as the geographic or regional relationships of the areas that may be protected by each database. Exchange procedures are disclosed in which incumbent information between two databases is exchanged. Also described herein are exchanges of information between databases whereby a querying database may receive restrictions on associated operating parameters of Cognitive Radio Systems (CRSs) under their control in an area. Further, a procedure is described herein by which a database that receives a request for shared spectrum from a CRS may first forward the request to a neighboring or victim database to determine the allowable channels and then may make the actual allocation based on this information and its own incumbents.

Method and procedure for communication between databases or spectrum management functions

There is disclosed a method, apparatus and a computer code to maintain databases. In the method a first database containing information of a usage of a frequency spectrum is maintained for a first geographical area by the apparatus. Information is received from a second database apparatus on a second geographical area. The first database apparatus determines whether said first geographical area and said second geographical area are at least partly overlapping. A linkage table is maintained to provide an indication on the result of the determination, wherein said indication is indicative of whether said first geographical area and said second geographical area are at least partly overlapping.

Method and an apparatus for maintaining a database containing information on frequency spectrum usage

A white space entity reserves spectrum in white space from a reservation system. Consequently, the white space entity may utilize television bands that are unused at a specified time period and geo-location in order to support different services such as wireless audio transmission, networking, video surveillance, and video conferencing. The white space entity requests reservation of spectrum resources from the reservation system by sending a reservation request. The request includes request parameters that may include geo-location, model number or manufacture code number, priority of entity, reservation time period, and maximum power level. The reservation system consequently verifies the request from the priority of the white space entity and the availability of white space spectrum for the desired time period. The white space entity then extracts confirmation parameters from a reservation confirmation message and subsequently transmits on white spectrum in accordance with the parameters.
