A uniform and unified firmware in-field upgrade capability for the optics modules may ensure compatibility, security and code quality, and scalability. In some examples, an intermediate representation, which includes vendor firmware upgrade operations and control logic, may be defined, received, and parsed. Read/write operations may be communicated to optical module(s) based on the control logic. In some examples, a unified optics module firmware in-field upgrade framework, which has multiple defined software layers, may ensure a uniform and unified approach to managing optics module(s) from different vendors and used by different projects. The software layers that may properly translate optics module read/write operations, abstract and make uniform the read/write operations, provide libraries of intermediate representations, package the intermediate representations into executables/scripts, monitor optics module status, determine when a new firmware is released, and gradually upgrade the optics module firmware.

Methods for optics module firmware in-field upgrade

An optical links diagnostic system (LDS) and its operation within an optical circuit switch (OCS) for measurement and diagnosis of fiber-optic network fiber performance and quality is disclosed. The LDS can contain two photodetectors, a laser source, and be coupled to an OCS. Optical circulators can further be linked to the OCS. The LDS can be used both as an optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) or as an optical return loss (ORL) meter and can automate the diagnosis of the fiber optical network fiber insertion loss and return loss.

Optical link diagnostic system

An optical network node includes first and second node inputs receiving first and second multiplexed optical signals, respectively. The optical network node includes node outputs, each outputting a separate replicated or demultiplexed optical signal. The optical network node includes a first optical power splitter having a first splitter input connected to the first node input and first splitter outputs connected to the node outputs. The optical network node includes a second optical power splitter having a second splitter input connected to the second node input and second splitter outputs connected to the node outputs. The optical network node includes an arrayed waveguide grating having a grating input connected to the first node input and grating outputs connected to the node outputs, the arrayed waveguide grating demultiplexing the first multiplexed optical signal, when the first multiplexed optical signal is wavelength division multiplexed.

Optical network remote node for G-PON  and WDM-PON

A device includes an array of optical transmitters having first and second temperature sensors each disposed at or near a first and second end of the array of the transmitters. The device includes a controller in communication with the temperature sensors and the transmitters. The controller receives temperature measurements from the temperatures sensors and determines a temperature difference between a first temperature measurement of the first temperature sensor and a second temperature measurement of the second temperature sensor. The controller determines a compensation for each transmitter within the transmitter array based on the temperature difference and a transmitter position within the array of transmitters. The compensation causes the corresponding transmitter to transmit at a wavelength associated with that transmitter. The controller executes the compensations for the transmitters.

Temperature compensation in an optical transmitter

An optical communication device includes a transmitter having a transmitter port and a receiver having loopback and receiver ports. The transmitter transmits a first multiplexed signal in a first optical spectrum from the transmitter port. The receiver receives the first multiplexed signal in the loopback port and a second multiplexed signal in the receiver port. The second multiplexed signal is in a second optical spectrum different from the first optical spectrum. The receiver includes a demultiplexer in optical communication with the loopback port and the receiver port. The demultiplexer demultiplexes the first and second multiplexed signals received by the loopback and receiver ports.

Optical loopback in a wavelength division multiplexing system

The wavelength tunable laser includes a thermo-electric cooler (TEC), a distributed feedback portion, and a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). The distributed feedback portion is disposed on the thermo-electric cooler and has a plurality of distributed feedback (DFB) lasers connected in series. Each DFB laser is configured to output an optical signal within a different temperature dependent tunable range of wavelengths. Therefore, the distributed feedback portion outputs an optical signal from one of the DFB lasers. The SOA is optically connected to the distributed feedback portion. The SOA amplifies and modulates the optical signal outputted from the distributed feedback portion.

Wavelength tunable laser

An optical network remote node includes first and second node inputs, each receiving a multiplexed optical signal, and node outputs, each outputting a separate demultiplexed optical signal. The node includes first and second optical power splitters, each having a splitter input connected to one of the node inputs and splitter outputs connected to corresponding node outputs. The node includes an arrayed waveguide grating having first and second grating inputs connected to the first and second node inputs, respectively, and grating outputs connected to the corresponding node outputs. If the received signal at one of the node inputs is time division multiplexed, the corresponding connected optical power splitter broadcasts the received optical signal at the node outputs. If the received signal at one of the node inputs is wavelength division multiplexed, the arrayed waveguide grating demultiplexes the received optical signals in wavelength and outputs the demultiplexed signals at the node outputs.
