The invention relates to an indexable milling insert () having a polygonal basic shape, comprising four peripheral sides, which meet each other in pairs in one the one hand two acute corners (), and on the other hand two obtuse corners (). Between chip surfaces () on the top side of the insert and flank surfaces () along the peripheral sides, cutting edges () are formed, which individually comprise on the hand a major edge portion (), and, on the other hand, a rounded minor edge portion (), formed in connection with an acute corner (). Characteristic of the invention is the combination that the individual major edge portion () is slightly arched and that at least one connecting surface () is formed in the bottom side of the insert, of the type that comprises a plurality of parallel ridges spaced-apart by grooves having a cross-section-wise tapering shape and which are intended to co-operate with an analogous connecting surface adjacent to a chip channel in a cutting-insert-carrying milling head.

Indexable milling insert

A tool intended for chip removing machining includes a holder and a cutting insert which have respective connecting surfaces arranged to engage each other and define an interface. A ridge having a tapering cross-sectional shape is formed in one of the connecting surfaces, and a groove having a tapering cross-sectional shape is formed in the other connecting surface, which groove receives the ridge. Both of the ridge and groove are in the shape of curves as viewed in a direction perpendicular to the respective connecting surface. The curve shape may be circular, elliptical, or polygonal.

A cutting tool includes a basic body having a insert seat and a rotatable cutting insert mounted on a connecting surface of the seat. The insert includes a chip cutting top side, a bottom side and an outer peripheral side, whereby there is a cutting edge in the area between the top side and the peripheral side. Formed on the connecting surface of the seat is at least one first ring formation, and formed in the bottom surface of the insert is at least one second ring formation having an equal diameter as the first ring formation. At least one of the first and second ring formations comprises a groove. The first and second ring formations are in direct or indirect engagement with each other in order to form a guide between the cutting insert and the basic body that permits rotation of the cutting insert about its own center axis and simultaneously keeps the insert in an exactly defined radial position.

An indexible cutting insert has a connecting surface formed by alternating parallel ridges and grooves. Each ridge is defined by a pair of flanks which converge in an outward direction. Each ridge includes a convexly curved surface portion for making line contact with a corresponding ridge of a support surface. The convexly curved surface is spaced from outer and inner ends of the respective flank.

A milling tool includes a rotary cutting head having an end surface in which grooves are formed. The grooves communicate with a duct extending coaxially completely through the center of the cutting head to conduct cooling/lubricating fluid to cutting inserts mounted at outer ends of the grooves. The grooves induce a flow of fluid from inner ends of the grooves to the outer ends in response to rotation of the cutting head. A removable deflector can be attached to the end surface to deflect fluid from the main duct to the grooves.
