Providing for a fixed focus optical system exhibiting extended depth of field is provided herein. By way of example, a compact and fast optical system that yields an asymmetric modulation transfer function (MTF) is disclosed. In some aspects, the asymmetric MTF results in extended depth of field for near field objects. Such a response can be particularly beneficial for small handheld cameras or camera modules having high resolution. According to some disclosed aspects, the resolution can be about 8 mega pixels. Additionally, the optical system can comprise four lenses in one aspect and five lenses in another, while remaining below about 5.3 mm total track length (TTL) for the respective systems. In at least one application, the disclosed optical systems can be employed for a high resolution compact camera, for instance in conjunction with an electronic computing device, communication device, display device, surveillance equipment, or the like.

Fixed focal length optical lens architecture providing a customized depth of focus optical system

Providing for a wafer level optical system employing composite lenses is disclosed herein. Conventional focus lens assemblies require three or more lenses. By way of example, two composite lenses can be used to reduce the cost of a wafer-level camera. In some aspects, the composite lenses can be aspheric and can employ a broader variety of wafer materials than earlier designs that only operated in narrow ranges of refractive indices and Abbe numbers.

Providing for optical imaging lenses employing non-linear distortion for image magnification is described herein. By way of example, a five-lens system can perform magnification functions by producing distortion that expands the image in the center of the field of view and compresses the image in the periphery of the field of view. This distortion can be corrected through image processing to yield a rectified image. Further, the five-lens system can be implemented as part of a fixed-focus imaging system, or in conjunction with a variable focus optical magnification imaging system.

A lens system is provided that comprises an enhanced depth of field based on a uniform or near uniform relative illumination via a lens with a large distortion. The distortion can be corrected with image processing equipment. The lens system can comprise an aperture stop and a group of lens, wherein there can be about five lenses in the group of lenses. The lens system is designed for relative illumination such that the light distribution over the lens system is substantially uniform.

A camera system includes an optical assembly including a folded optic, the folded optic including a transparent support substrate, a first lens surface on a first surface of the transparent support substrate, and a second lens surface on the first surface of the transparent support substrate, at least one of the first and second lens surfaces including a replication material, and a sensor configured to receive light from the optical assembly that has been incident on both the first and second lens surfaces sequentially.
