Systems and methods for rapidly and reliably determining an arch width of a patient's dental arch. A three-dimensional (3D) model of a patient's teeth, including a target tooth, can be received. Dental features from the 3D model may be extracted. The dental features may include a point of intersection between an occlusal surface of a tooth and a long axis of the tooth. An arch width between the target tooth and an opposing tooth may be determined based on the extracted dental features.

The example systems, methods, and/or computer-readable media described herein help with design treatment plans for orthodontic treatments. Treatment templates reflecting a user's treatment preferences are expressed in a domain-specific treatment language and include treatment protocols. Orthodontic treatment plans are customized based on the treatment templates and a physical condition of the patient. Treatment appliances are fabricated based on the customized orthodontic treatment plans.

These methods and systems may be also be useful for planning, designing and producing as series of dental appliances (e.g., aligners).

A first portion of a 3D model of a patient's dentition is identified that corresponds to a first target tooth, the first portion of the 3D model is associated with one or more attributes of the first target tooth. The second portion is associated with one or more attributes of the second target tooth. The arch width is automatically measured based on the attributes of the first and second target teeth. A graphic representing the arch width is overlayed on the patient's dentition.

Systems and methods for rapidly and reliably determining an arch with of a patient's dental arch. A patient's dentition may be scanned and/or segmented. Arch width may be determined between points of intersection on the occlusal surface and a long axis of each tooth between one or more of: canine, first bicuspid, first primary molar, second bicuspid, second primary molar, and permanent first molar. Arch widths of different modified versions of the patient's dentition may be dynamically compared the patient's starting dentition, or to each other, and may be dynamically updated as the user modifies or switches between one or more 3D models of the patient's dentition.
