Embodiments of a transparent glass-based material comprising a glass phase and a second phase that is different from and is dispersed in the glass phase are provided. The second phase may comprise a crystalline or a nanocrystalline phase, a fiber, and/or glass particles. In some embodiments, the second phase is crystalline. In one or more embodiments, the glass-based material has a transmittance of at least about 88% over a visible spectrum ranging from about 400 nm to about 700 nm and a fracture toughness of at least about 0.9 MPa&#xb7;m, and wherein a surface of the glass-based material, when scratched with a Knoop diamond at a load of at least 5 N to form a scratch having a width w, is free of chips having a size of greater than 3 w.

A method of forming complex structures in a ceramic-, glass- or glass-ceramic-body microfluidic module is disclosed including the steps of providing at green-state refractory-material structure comprising least a portion of a body of a microfluidic module, providing a removeable insert formed of a carbon or of a carbonaceous material having an external surface comprising a negative surface of a desired surface to be formed in the microfluidic module, machining an opening in the green-state structure, positioning the insert in the opening, firing the green-state structure and the insert together, and after firing is complete, removing the insert. The insert is desirably a screw or screw shape, such that interior threads are formed thereby. The insert desirably comprises graphite, and the structure desirably comprises ceramic, desirably silicon carbide.

Complex structures in refractory bodies and methods of forming

A method of forming an improved sealed joint between two or more shaped ceramic structures includes providing at least first and second ceramic structures joined together by a joint comprising one or more of silicon, a silicon alloy and a silicon compound, the joint including an exposed portion interior of the joined structures, then converting at least a portion of the one or more of silicon, a silicon alloy, and a silicon compound of the joint to silicon nitride and/or silicon carbide, desirably at least at an interior exposed portion of the joint, so as to provide increased chemical resistance for the joint when aggressive chemicals are used within device formed from the sealed-together ceramic structures. The ceramic structures desirably comprise silicon carbide.

Embodiments of methods for sealing a glass microstructure assembly comprise providing one or more side retainer members on a base plate adjacent the glass microstructure assembly, the side retainer members having a height less than an uncompressed height defined by the glass microstructure assembly. The methods also comprise compressing the glass microstructure assembly via a load bearing top plate in intimate contact with the top glass layer while heating the glass microstructure assembly and the top plate to a glass sealing temperature, the glass sealing temperature being a temperature sufficient to make glass viscous, wherein the glass microstructure assembly is compressed until the load bearing top plate contacts the side retainer members, and wherein the lower surface of the top plate maintains adhesion to the upper surface of the top glass layer at the glass sealing temperature while the load bearing plate is supported by the side retainer members.
