Symmetrical tetrachloropyridine is prepared by contacting chlorinated .beta.-(trichloromethyl)pyridines with chlorine in a liquid phase reaction in the presence of from 0.1 to 1.0 mole % of a catalyst.

The selective chlorination of 2-chloro-5-(trichloromethyl)pyridine in the 3-position is achieved by reacting 2-chloro-5-(trichloromethyl)pyridine in the liquid phase with an effective amount of Cl.sub.2 at an elevated pressure and elevated temperature in the absence of an added catalyst.

Metal chloride catalysts employed in liquid phase chlorination reactions are recovered by treating the reaction mass with oxygen or air to form solid metal oxychloride compounds which can be separated and reused.
