A compressor includes a diffuser passage configured to receive refrigerant flow from an impeller of the compressor, where the diffuser passage is at least partially defined by a compressor discharge plate of the compressor. The compressor also includes a variable geometry diffuser positioned within the diffuser passage and configured to adjust a dimension of a refrigerant flow path through the diffuser passage, an actuator coupled to the variable geometry diffuser and configured to adjust a position of the variable geometry diffuser within the diffuser passage, and a controller configured to regulate operation of the actuator. The controller is configured to instruct the actuator to adjust the position of the variable geometry diffuser from a first position to a second position using a first force and to adjust the position of the variable geometry diffuser from the second position to a third position using a second force less than the first force, where the variable geometry diffuser abuts the compressor discharge plate in the third position.

A compressor for a heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC&R) system includes an impeller that has a hub defining an impeller tip, a plurality of blades coupled to the hub and defining a plurality of flow paths configured to direct a primary flow of working fluid therethrough, and a shroud coupled to the plurality of blades. The shroud includes a shroud tip disposed upstream of the impeller tip relative to a flow direction of the primary flow of working fluid through the plurality of flow paths.

System and method for directing fluid flow in a compressor

A centrifugal compressor assembly is provided. The centrifugal compressor assembly includes a scroll assembly having a suction plate defining an inlet fluid passage, a suction plate housing, a diffuser plate, and a collector. The suction plate is detachably coupled to the suction plate housing, the suction plate housing is detachably coupled to the collector, and the diffuser plate is detachably coupled to the collector. The centrifugal compressor assembly further includes an impeller rotatably mounted in the scroll assembly for compressing fluid introduced through the inlet fluid passage, and a variable geometry diffuser system.

A motor assembly includes a shaft, a bearing, at least one fluid channel, a temperature sensor, a lubricant supply pump, and a controller. The bearing defines a bearing interface against which the shaft rotates. The at least one fluid channel is fluidly coupled with the bearing interface. The temperature sensor detects a temperature of the bearing. The lubricant supply pump is fluidly coupled with the at least one fluid channel to transport lubricant from a lubricant supply to the bearing interface via the at least one fluid channel. The controller receives the bearing temperature from the temperature sensor, determines a difference between the bearing temperature and a supply temperature of the lubricant, determines a lubricant flow rate based on the difference, and transmits a control signal to the lubricant supply pump to cause the lubricant supply pump to transport the lubricant to the bearing interface at the lubricant flow rate.

Active bearing temperature control

A hybrid cooling system for a hermetic motor includes an annular cavity in a motor housing that receives a vapor flow and an annulus in the motor housing that receives a liquid flow. The hybrid cooling system includes a sleeve disposed adjacent to the annular cavity and the annulus, where a radial opening is defined through the sleeve. The hybrid cooling system includes a stator at least partially surrounded by the sleeve, a gap defined between the stator and a rotor, and a vent slot of the stator configured to receive the vapor flow from the annular cavity through the radial opening of the sleeve and direct the vapor flow to the gap. The hybrid cooling system includes an exit path in the motor housing configured to direct an evaporated vapor flow, generated from the liquid flow contacting the stator, and the vapor flow out of the motor housing.

Hybrid cooling systems for hermetic motors

A diffuser system for a centrifugal compressor is provided. The diffuser system includes a nozzle base plate that defines a diffuser gap, support blocks, and a drive ring rotatable relative to the support blocks. The drive ring includes cam tracks and bearing assemblies positioned proximate an outer circumference of the drive ring. The diffuser system further includes drive pins extending through the support blocks and the nozzle base plate. The first end of each drive pin includes a cam follower mounted into a cam track on the drive ring. The second end of each drive pin is coupled to a diffuser ring. Rotation of the drive ring causes axial movement of the drive pins by movement of the cam followers in the cam tracks. This results in movement of the diffuser ring to control fluid flow through the diffuser gap.

Compact variable geometry diffuser mechanism

A system for cooling a hermetic motor includes a motor cooling refrigerant flow path configured to direct refrigerant from a condenser disposed along a refrigerant loop to a hermetic motor, and from the hermetic motor back to the refrigerant loop, and a housing of the hermetic motor disposed along the motor cooling refrigerant flow path and configured to receive the refrigerant from the condenser, wherein the housing of the hermetic motor comprises an annulus surrounding at least a portion of a stator of the hermetic motor, and wherein the annulus comprises a plurality of openings configured to direct refrigerant toward the stator and into a cavity of the housing of the hermetic motor.

A sealed induction motor for a chiller assembly is provided. The induction motor includes a stator, a rotor, and a shaft with a first end and a second end. The rotor and the shaft are configured to rotate relative to the stator. The induction motor further includes a first magnetic bearing assembly located proximate the first end of the shaft and a second magnetic bearing assembly located proximate the second end of the shaft. The first and the second magnetic bearing assemblies are configured to support the shaft. The shaft is coupled to a centrifugal compressor using a direct drive connection.

A cooling system for a motor to power a compressor in a vapor compression system is provided. The cooling system includes a housing with a cavity enclosing the motor and defining a central axis and fluid directing features extending into the cavity and oriented parallel to the central axis. The cooling system further includes a fluid circuit configured to circulate a cooling fluid between the housing and the motor. The fluid circuit includes a first cooling fluid path defined by directing features that cause a first portion of cooling fluid to travel around a first portion of the motor and a second cooling fluid path defined by fluid directing features that cause a second portion of cooling fluid to travel around a second portion of the motor. The second portion of the motor is located opposite the first portion.

A heating, ventilation, and/or air conditioning (HVAC) system includes a compressor having an impeller configured to rotate and drive a working fluid through a working fluid circuit of the HVAC system in an active operating mode. The HVAC system further includes a controller configured to, in response to receiving an input indicative of a transition to operate in an inactive operating mode, suspend the active operating mode by interrupting a supply of power to the compressor, adjust pre-rotation vanes of the compressor, a variable geometry diffuser of the compressor to a first position, or both to enable a backflow of the working fluid through the compressor for a first interval of time, and, after the first interval of time has elapsed, adjust the pre-rotation vanes, the variable geometry diffuser, or both to a second position to block the backflow of the working fluid through the compressor.

A self-centering bearing assembly is provided. The bearing assembly includes a magnetic bearing device configured to support a rotating shaft and a magnetic bearing support housing. The magnetic bearing housing has a disc-like shape and multiple tabs extending from an outer diameter portion in an axial direction. The bearing assembly further includes an auxiliary bearing device configured to support the rotating shaft during an auxiliary bearing condition, and an auxiliary bearing support housing. The auxiliary bearing support housing has a disc-like shape with a first diameter portion and a second diameter portion. The first diameter portion has a larger diameter than the second diameter portion. The tabs are configured to couple to the second diameter portion such that the auxiliary bearing support housing is concentric to the magnetic bearing support housing.

An eductor system for a chiller assembly is provided. The system includes a first and a second eductor. The first eductor includes a first suction inlet that receives a first oil and refrigerant mixture from a plenum of a compressor, a first motive inlet that receives a first motive fluid from an oil sump, and a first outlet that discharges a first outlet mixture to the oil sump. The first outlet mixture includes both the first oil and refrigerant mixture and the first motive fluid. The second eductor includes a second suction inlet that receives a second oil and refrigerant mixture from an evaporator, a second motive inlet that receives a second motive fluid from a condenser, and a second outlet that discharges a second outlet mixture to the plenum of the compressor. The second outlet mixture includes both the second oil and refrigerant mixture and the second motive fluid.

A diffuser system for a centrifugal compressor is provided. The diffuser system includes a nozzle base plate () that defines a diffuser gap (), support blocks (), and a drive ring () rotatable relative to the support blocks. The drive ring includes cam tracks () and bearing assemblies () positioned proximate an outer circumference of the drive ring. The diffuser system further includes drive pins () extending through the support blocks and the nozzle base plate. The first end of each drive pin includes a cam follower () mounted into a cam track on the drive ring. The second end of each drive pin is coupled to a diffuser ring (). Rotation of the drive ring causes axial movement of the drive pins by movement of the cam followers in the cam tracks. This results in movement of the diffuser ring to control fluid flow through the diffuser gap.

A compressor for a heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC&R) unit includes an impeller, a shaft configured to rotate the impeller, and a fastener. The impeller includes an opening and does not include keys, splines, pins, or any combination thereof. The fastener is coupled to an end of the shaft and extends through the opening of the impeller, and the fastener is configured to stretch in an axial direction relative to the shaft via a tensioner during assembly of the compressor.
