A system for controlling access to priority access wireless resources divides a radio spectrum into first wireless resources for use by general access devices and second wireless resources for use by priority access devices. A base station receives, from a server, information concerning the first and second wireless resources, including resource entries corresponding to each of the first and second wireless resources. Upon receiving a request for available wireless resources from a general access device, the base station provides one of the resource entries corresponding to the second wireless resources. The system includes a general access device which aggregates resource entries for the first and second resources for communication with another general access device. When the general access device detects priority access to the second resource, the general access device either releases the second resource or reduces transmission power on the aggregated first and second resources.

Techniques for spread spectrum wireless over non-contiguous channels are described. In at least some embodiments, a set of channels is selected for wireless communication, with at least some of the channels being non-contiguous (e.g., non-adjacent) from one another. A spreading sequence is selected, such as based on attributes of a selected set of channels. Communication data that is to be transmitted over the set of channels is combined with the spreading sequence to generate a spread spectrum signal. The spread spectrum signal is then divided into multiple sub-signals for transmission over the set of channels.

An apparatus controlling channel assignments for a shared access system is disclosed. The apparatus generates a first registration in a database that indicates that a first channel is assigned to a device and sends the identity of the first channel to the device. The device may use the first channel to communicate with other devices in the system. The apparatus may receive a query from the device indicating the first channel is encumbered. In response to the query, the apparatus may send the identity of a second channel to the device, generate a second registration in the database that indicates that the second channel is assigned to the device, and generate an amendment to the database indicating that the first channel is encumbered. The apparatus may then verify whether the first channel is encumbered and remove or keep the amendment in the database based on the verification.

Multi-tier spectrum access channel assignment

Techniques for priority access to a priority access channel are described. In at least some embodiments, a portion of the radio spectrum is divided into general access (GA) channels and priority access (PA) channels. Levels of access to the different channels are controlled based upon priority levels of devices attempting to access the channels. For instance, embodiments employ a channel database that tracks available GA channels and PA channels, and notifies various devices of the available channels. The channel database may also track keys for PA channels that enable authentication of devices for priority access to PA channels. In at least some embodiments, tracking available GA channels and PA channels enables underutilized radio channels to be identified for various uses, such as for wireless broadband communication.

Disclosed herein is a system for providing information related to a shared frequency spectrum to a wireless network that lacks Internet connectivity. The system may include one or more processors and memory including instructions that are executable by the one or more processors to perform operations. The operations may include receiving registration of the wireless network when a vehicle is within a communication range of the wireless network, querying a database on behalf of the wireless network when an Internet connection is available, receiving query results including the information related to the shared frequency spectrum, and communicating the information related to the shared frequency spectrum to the wireless network when the vehicle or a proxy of the vehicle is again within the communication range of the wireless network.

Opportunistic use of spectrum is disclosed that allows a device access to a wireless local area network (WLAN) when necessary on a restricted frequency band and provides efficient scanning and switching of device communications to an unrestricted frequency band when channels become available in the unrestricted frequency band. A device operating in the network on the restricted frequency band may receive information on a channel set over a channel in the restricted frequency band. The channel set may be a subset of channels in the network and indicate network channels available for potential use in the unrestricted frequency band. The device may then only scan the subset of channels in the channel set to search for available channels in the unrestricted band. The channel set may be determined by the network based on the operation of the device in the coverage of the restricted frequency band.

Techniques for wireless connectivity using white spaces (e.g., television (TV) white spaces) are described. In at least some embodiments, movement of a device operating as a white space access point is monitored by local sensors within the device. Movement data that is gathered by the local sensors is used to determine an upper bound of distance traveled. When the upper bound reaches a threshold distance, various actions can be performed relating to the data transmission, such as to cease transmission or to utilize different portions of the radio spectrum.

Techniques for guard band usage for wireless data transmission are described. In at least some embodiments, white spaces in the radio spectrum (e.g., television (TV) white spaces) and guard bands between licensed bands of the radio spectrum are leveraged for data transmission. Based on available white spaces and service deployment in the licensed bands, various decisions can be made regarding how to leverage white spaces and guard bands for wireless data transmission.

The concepts relate to radio channel utilization. One example can monitor a location of a mobile device that has cellular capabilities. The example can identify a set of channels that are available to the mobile device at the location. The example can also send the set of channels to the mobile device with a suggestion for the mobile device to utilize one or more of the channels of the set to accomplish data communication rather than using the cellular capabilities.

One example can channel bond a first available channel from a first radio frequency band with a second available channel from a second radio frequency band. The channel can include a set of sub-channels that span from a lower frequency adjacent channel to a higher frequency adjacent channel. This example can encode the data on the set of sub-channels of the channel in a manner so that an individual sub-channel that is closer to either the lower frequency adjacent channel or the higher frequency adjacent channel than another individual sub-channel has a smaller amplitude than an amplitude of the another individual sub-channel.
