A data storage device includes load-sharing circuitry configured to utilize a threshold for distributing current from multiple sources and modify the threshold in response to a calculated power. The data storage device further includes power calculating circuitry configured to calculate power used from the multiple sources for use by the load-sharing circuitry.

A data storage device includes an electrical connector configured to receive an input voltage to power electronics of the data storage device. The data storage device further includes a fuse electrically coupled between the electrical connector and the electronics. The fuse is configured to output a signal indicative of current being inputted to the data storage device. The data storage device further includes a controller configured to calculate power based on the input voltage and the signal indicative of the current.

Narrow band dwell occurs when air bearings corresponding to a set of read and/or write heads within a hard disc drive remain within a fixed narrow band of one or more storage platters for an extended period of time. The air bearings displace lubricant on the storage platters and may redeposit the lubricant as droplets on the platters. The presently disclosure technology is directed to monitoring a hard disc drive for narrow band dwell, and in some implementations, implementing operations to mitigate narrow band dwell. More specifically, the presently disclosure technology may detect an overflying air-bearing slider position, apply a lubrication film displacement formula to a narrow band of the storage platter, apply a lubrication film reflow formula to one or more other narrow bands of the storage platter, and track lubrication film thickness over time in each of the narrow bands of the storage platter.

A system may have a data storage medium that contains at least one data bit that is accessed by a transducing head that has a near-field transducer. A controller can be connected to the transducing head and store a plurality of near-field transducer operating currents in a memory. The controller may identify a change in efficiency of the near-field transducer from the plurality of near-field transducer operating currents.

An apparatus of the present disclosure includes a controller coupled to a read/write head wherein the controller is configured to perform various operations. More specifically, the controller is configured to monitor an operational parameter of the read/write head and to detect a fault based on the operational parameter. The fault indicates that a write enabling energy source is malfunctioning during a write operation. The controller is additionally configured, in response to the fault, to take remedial action to protect data associated with the write operation.

A data storage subsystem in a distributed storage system having a plurality of predictive failure analyzing data storage devices. In a method for predicting failure of a disc drive during operation of the disc drive, a write fault count is maintained that corresponds to write faults encountered during write operations to a disc of the disc drive. Additionally, a frequency domain representation of a position error signal of a head of the disc drive is obtained. Finally, failure of the disc drive is predicted based on the write fault count and the frequency domain representation of the position error signal. Another aspect of the present invention relates to a disc drive that is capable of performing the above-described method.

Method and apparatus for monitoring temperature

An apparatus and method are disclosed for recovering from a header error condition in a disc drive of the type having a rotatable disc having a plurality of concentric tracks with data fields for the storage and retrieval of data and header fields providing logical address information for the data fields. The header fields include read and write header fields which are used during read and write operations, respectively, to align read and write elements of the head with the data fields. When the disc drive unsuccessfully decodes the logical address information from a selected header field associated with a selected data block, an alternate header error recovery routine is performed wherein attempts are made to decode the logical address information from the alternate header field associated with the selected data block. Radial offsets can further be applied to the head to enhance the decoding of the logical address information from the alternate header field.
