An end connector for a jacketed cable includes a rear body having a cylindrical retention portion with an outer surface that includes a plurality of recessed annular grooves. The cylindrical crimp comprises a plurality of thicker annular regions adjacent to and separated by a plurality of thinner annular regions. Each thicker annular region of the cylindrical crimp is axially aligned with a corresponding recessed annular groove on the outer surface of the cylindrical retention portion of the rear body, and such alignment is maintained during crimping to trap strength members of the jacketed cable.

Retention apparatus and method for terminating a jacketed cable

A clip for retaining a connection adapter within a hole in a cable connection panel is disclosed. The clip includes left and right frames for engaging left and right facets of the body of the connection adapter, and a back span adjoining the left and right frames together. The clip also includes left and right wings that adjoin and angle externally away from the left and right frames, respectively. Each wing comprises a distal tab that angles back towards its respective frame and that is configured to protrude between an internal edge of the hole and a facet of the adapter body. Each wing further comprises a distal tab that angles externally away from its respective frame generally like the wing itself.

A disk clamp for clamping a plurality of disks within a disk drive has a single fastening hole located at its symmetrical center sized to pass the shaft of a screw having a head diameter larger than the fastening hole. The screw fastens the disk clamp to a motor hub supporting the plurality of disks. The disk clamp has a moat around the fastening hole, at a maximum diameter that is smaller than the head diameter of the head on the fastening screw. The moat may be circular, have spike trenches angled toward the fastening hole, or be spiral. The diameter of the spiral moat decreases in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction toward the fastening hole. The midsection of the disk which the screw head covers is biased at a negative angle toward the fastening hole forcing particles generated during assembly toward the fastening hole of the disk clamp.

A swage mount is manufactured for attaching a head suspension assembly to a head actuator arm for a hard disk drive. A conductive material is deposited on a predetermined part of the swage mount. A coating material is deposited on the swage mount including the predetermined part. Heat is applied to the swage mount, forming a mixture of the conductive material and the coating material. The mixture is conductive and supports a reliable connection between the swage mount and other disk drive components. Furthermore, the mixture enhances cleanliness by reducing particles shed from the swage mount. The conductive material is preferably gold, and the coating material is preferably nickel-based.

A swage mount is provided for attaching a head suspension assembly to a head actuator arm for a hard disk drive. The swage mount has a flange body with a thickness for providing clearance from the underlying disk. The swage mount may have a tip for in-plane movement. The tip may be 'T' shaped. The tip has a thickness that is greater than the thickness of the flange body for withstanding out-of-plane loads and for enhancing performance of the hard disk drive, for example, during reading/writing of data using the head. Mass properties of the swage mount, the twisting/bending yield load, modal frequency responses, and other performance metrics are analyzed to design the dimensions of the swage mount having favorable in-plane compliance and superior out-of-plane robustness.

A disk clamp for clamping a number of magnetic hard disks within a disk drive has a plurality of balance weight holes and a coined index mark for use as a reference in balancing the hard disks after assembly. The disk clamp also has a coined profile located adjacent or around the balance weight holes in order to provide uniform circumferential clamp force by the disk clamp. The disk clamp has a profile that places the inner region of the disk clamp in the plastic deformation region at a certain specified clamping force at the center of the disk clamp.

A slider of the type for use with a rotatable magnetic disk is disclosed. The slider has two ends and a bottom surface which includes an air bearing surface. An adhesive layer and continuous coating of carbon is located on the air bearing surface. A method of sputter depositing this continuous layer of carbon upon the air bearing surface of the slider is also provided. The continuous layer of carbon is crown-shaped and deposited using the sputtering technique. The carbon is directed from a source at the air bearing surface of a slider. A mask is placed between the source and slider so that the carbon is deposited in a crown shape. When the slider is viewed from front to rear the maximum depth of the coating is less than about 6 to 10 nm, while at the ends of the slider the coating depth is near 0 nm. The resistivity of the protective carbon layer is controlled for the additional benefit of protection from damages by electrostatic discharge.

Carbon overcoat for magnetic head sliders

The surface of a slider for a magnetic recording head, a burnishing head, or a glide head includes a pair of rails that, in operation, face the magnetic recording medium to form air bearing surfaces. These air bearing surfaces have slots cut into them at the same prescribed angle relative to the longitudinal axis of the slider, and along a single straight line. This provides slots which are asymmetric about the longitudinal axis, causing the slider to fly nearer the recording medium and at almost constant height.
