Reaction-brazing of tungsten or molybdenum metal bodies to carbonaceous supports enables an x-ray generating anode to be joined to a preferred lightweight substrate. Complementary surfaces are provided on a dense refractory metal body and a graphite or a carbon-carbon composite support. A particulate braze mixture comprising Hf or Zr carbide, Mo or W boride, Hf or Zr powder and Mo or W powder is coated onto the support surface, and hafnium or zirconium foil may be introduced between the braze mixture and the refractory metal body complementary surface. Reaction-brazing is carried out at or near the eutectic point of the components, which may be influenced to some extent by the presence of carbon and boride. Heating to about 1865&deg; C. for a Mo/Hf combination creates a thin, dense, strong braze that securely joins the two bodies and creates a thin barrier of carbide and boride microphases near and along the interface with the carbon support that diminishes carbon diffusion into the metal body during extended exposures at elevated temperatures (above those presently used in x-ray tubes), even well above the eutectoid temperature.

A method for applying a chromium surface treatment to nickel-based air data sensors to improve the corrosion resistance properties of the components while retaining thermal conductivity in order to efficiently transfer internally generated heat to the exterior of the component during anti-icing or deicing procedures is provided. The method for applying a chromium surface treatment to nickel-based air data sensors includes the steps of: (a) ion plating a nickel-based substrate with chromium atoms using a physical vapor deposition process; (b) interdiffusing the chromium and the nickel atoms at the surface region by means of a first thermal treatment carried out in an inert environment; and (c) oxidizing the chromium atoms at the surface region to create a chromium oxide layer during a second thermal treatment performed in an oxygen-containing environment.

High-temperature-stable, fiber-reinforced beryllium metal matrix composite materials are fabricated using coating, infiltration and hot-pressing procedures. High-temperature-stable fibers of metal oxides, carbon or silicon carbide are coated with reaction barrier coatings which prevent chemical reactions from occurring at the interface with the surrounding metallic beryllium matrix at temperatures up to close to the melting point of beryllium. Coatings such as yttria, YAG and mixtures of yttria and YAG or of yttria and beryllia are employed exterior of metal oxide fibers, such as alumina or alumina-silica fibers. Suitable reaction barrier coatings are also employed over carbon fibers (or silicon carbide fibers) which preferably include an interior coating of elemental silicon upon the exterior surface of the carbon fibers. Oxide coatings are preferably applied by immersion in a liquid bath containing a suitable coating solution, preferably an alcohol solvent alkoxide sol-gel.

Chromium surface treatment of nickel-based substrates

An electrorheological(ER) composite material with solid, elastomeric characteristics in the form of an elastomer matrix encompassing an ER fluid. This ER composite material changes certain of its physical properties in response to an imposed electric field (as do known ER fluids), but it has the advantage of maintaining a defined spatial volume without the need of sophisticated seals. It also provides desirable design features inherent in an elastic solid having the specific capability of being molded in conjunction with a containment surface to which it strongly adhesively bonds. Certain physical properties of these ER composite materials and their physical response to the application of an electric field may be varied by varying the properties and/or the proportions of the ER fluid component and the resin prepolymer component which are employed in formulating the composite.

Electrorheological elastomeric composite materials

Disclosed is a new and improved apparatus for aligning and bonding a pre-perforated flexible repair tape to the side edge portion of an elongated strip, such as motion picture film, having damaged sprocket feed hole perforations located therealong. Film to be repaired is fed continuously from a supply reel to a repair station comprising a grooved pressure roller cooperating with a sprocket roller specifically designed to more precisely align the preformed feed holes of the tape with the damaged feed hole locations of the film, and to bond the tape and film together in the aligned condition, the laminated tape and film thereafter being directed over an exit ramp to a storage reel for collection.

Disclosed is an apparatus and method for automatically aligning and bonding a preperforated flexible repair tape to the side edge portion of an elongated strip, such as motion picture film, having damaged sprocket feed hole perforations located therealong. Film to be repaired is fed continuously from a supply reel through a pair of straightening and flattening rollers to a repair station comprising a pressure roller cooperating with a sprocket roller to automatically and precisely align the preformed feed holes of the tape with the damaged feed hole locations of the film and to bond the tape and film together in the aligned condition. From the repair station, the laminated tape and film pass through a pair of cooperating rollers to more firmly bond the tape and film preparatory to collection on a take-up reel.
