A Light-Emitting Diode (LED) illuminator-condenser capable of supplying bright-field, dark-field, fluorescence, oblique, and phase-contrast illumination under K&#xf6;hler-like conditions. A single lens may be permanently focused on the specimen plane. Illumination conditions may be made by a combination of uniform LEDs, collimating masks and diffusers. LEDs may be arranged in one or more ring-shaped patterns.

The present embodiment relates to a miniaturized single-use apparatus for the preparation and analysis of suspensions of cells for flow cytometry. The cartridge apparatus is a unique combination, in order of function, of a miniature single-drive, two-cylinder syringe pump, a dual-channel stopcock valve that also performs volumetric measuring functions, a capillary-based fluid loading and measuring method, a miniaturized multistage interfacial-surface-generator mixer, a microfluidic magnetic cell selector, branching microfluidic channels with widths determined according to function, enclosed absorption-based disposal of potentially biohazardous liquids and a design compatible with manufacturing as a single-use device. In one embodiment the device for processing and labeling samples processes and samples small volumes, such as a drop of blood. The device can exist in hand-held versions, hand-carried versions and bench-scale versions of optical reading devices for flow cytometry.

A method for non-invasively determining a chemical property of an aqueous solution is provided. The method provides the steps of providing a colored solute having a light absorbance spectrum and transmitting light through the colored solute at two different wavelengths. The method further provides the steps of measuring light absorbance of the colored solute at the two different transmitted light wavelengths, and comparing the light absorbance of the colored solute at the two different wavelengths to determine a chemical property of an aqueous solution.

Method for non-invasive determination of chemical properties of aqueous solutions

An electrophoresis device is disclosed which separates cells, particles, proteins and other separands by collecting samples of decreasing electrophoretic mobility in a train of inverted cavities while an electric field is applied between said inverted cavities and one or more sample cuvettes containing a mixture of cells, particles, proteins or other separands. One circular plate is provided for the one or more sample cuvettes, and one circular plate is provided for the multiple collection cavities. The invention utilizes an innovative purification method that combines free electrophoresis and multistage extraction in an instrument capable of separating living cells, particles, and proteins in useful quantities at high concentrations. The purification method includes a method for dealing with electrolysis products, a technique for controlling the electrical energy input, and an approach for keeping the process isothermal. The invention solves many separation applications problems on earth and also in reduced gravity in space flight.

Multistage electrophoresis apparatus and method of use for the separation and purification of cells, particles and solutes

The present invention relates to improved techniques for separating cells, particles and molecules important to medical science and biotechnology because separation is frequently the limiting factor for many biological processes. The apparatus and method of use provides an innovative method for quantitatively separating cells, proteins, or other particles, using multistage, magnetically, electromagnetically assisted separation technology, (&ldquo;MAGSEP&rdquo;). The MAGSEP technology provides a separation technology applicable to medical, chemical, cell biology, and biotechnology processes. Moreover, the instant invention relates to a method for separating and isolating mixtures of combinatorial synthesized molecules such that a variety of products are prepared, in groups, possessing diversity in size, length, (molecular weight), and structural elements. These are then analyzed for the ability to bind specifically to an antibody, receptor, or other ligate. Such a collection may provide a ligand library containing specific ligands for any ligate even though there are a greater number of conformations available to any one sequence. This technology provides a cell biologists a tool for studying molecular recognition. Combinational chemical libraries containing known and random sequences can be surveyed for strong ligands. Such a tool provides a means of recognizing and isolating agonists, antagonists, enzyme inhibitors, virus blockers, antigens, and other pharmaceuticals, but more significantly quantities of receptors on biological cells in aqueous suspensions including body fluids.

Multistage electromagnetic separator for purifying cells, chemicals and protein structures

An apparatus and method for controlling the pore structure of thin polymeric sheets, such as porous membranes and thin films, during solvent casting or interfacial polymerization. The invention may be used to reduce or eliminate macrovoid pore defects from solvent-cast or interfacially polymerized polymeric membranes used in a variety of separations or controlled release tasks or to create a desired pore structure in porous thin films, such as may be used in breathable garments, surgical dressings, and screen printing. A nonuniform electric field is generated at one or more locations in proximity to a liquid film in which a desired pore structure is to be formed. Due to the difference in dielectric constant between the liquid within the pores and that in the surrounding liquid, the electric field causes an attractive or repulsive force on the evolving pores.

A method and apparatus for demixing an aqueous solution is provided. The aqueous solution has at least two aqueous phases. The method comprises applying acoustic energy to the aqueous solution. The apparatus comprises a mechanism for applying acoustic energy to the aqueous solution until the aqueous solution is demixed to clarity.

Method and apparatus for acoustically demixing aqueous solutions

A condenser system for controlling vapor concentration contained in a flowing airstream is provided. The flowing airstream has an initial temperature upon entering the condenser system and a final temperature upon exiting the condenser system. The condenser system has a membrane member allowing mass transfer of the vapor therethrough with the airstream contacting the membrane member. A condensing member diffuses the vapor from the airstream through the membrane member. An insulating layer is positioned between the membrane member and the condensing member with the insulating layer inhibiting heat transfer between the flowing airstream and the condensing member wherein the final temperature of the airstream is substantially equal to the initial temperature of the airstream.
