A phosphor blend is described wherein the blend consists of a red-emitting rare earth phosphor, a green-emitting rare earth phosphor, and a blue-emitting rare earth phosphor wherein the 50% size of the phosphors is between about 12 to 15 &#x3bc;m. The phosphor blend is incorporated into a fluorescent lamp having an increased efficacy. A dual layer coating may be used to provide an additional increase in efficacy.

An energy saving gas discharge lamp, and method of making same, is provided. The gas discharge lamp includes a light-transmissive envelope, and an electrode within the light-transmissive envelope to provide a discharge. A light scattering reflective layer is disposed on an inner surface of the light-transmissive envelope. A phosphor layer is coated on the light scattering reflective layer. A discharge-sustaining gaseous mixture is retained inside the light-transmissive envelope. The discharge-sustaining gaseous mixture includes more than% xenon, by volume, at a low pressure.

Energy saving gas discharge lamp including a xenon-based gaseous mixture

An energy saving gas discharge lamp, and method of making same, is provided. The gas discharge lamp includes a light-transmissive envelope, and an electrode within the light-transmissive envelope to provide a discharge. A light scattering reflective layer is disposed on an inner surface of the light-transmissive envelope. A phosphor layer is coated on the light scattering reflective layer. A discharge-sustaining gaseous mixture is retained inside the light-transmissive envelope. The discharge-sustaining gaseous mixture includes more than 80% xenon, by volume, at a low pressure.

A lamp envelope is provided with an alumina layer and a multilayer phosphor coating on the alumina layer. The phosphor coating includes a top phosphor layer with a first weight percent of rare earth activators and a middle phosphor layer with a second weight percent of rare earth activators. The second weight percent is less than the first weight percent so that a total amount of the activators in the coating is reduced while maintaining a required lamp brightness and color rendering index (CRI). Preferably, the second weight percent is about 50-60% of the first weight percent and the middle layer is about 30-50% of a total weight of the coating so that a total weight of the activators in the coating is no more than about 80% of a weight of the activators in the coating if the first and second weight percents were the same.

Lamp with multi-layer phosphor coating

A solder glass which has, by weight: about 60 to 67% Sb O ; about 27 to 32% B O ; and from greater than 0 to 10% ZnO. The glass has a softening point between 388 and 466&deg; C., depending on the ZnO content. The glass can be employed as a molten seal in electrical devices such as tungsten halogen or metal halide lamps.

A method for providing an adherent, continuous, conformal, non-particulate coating of a compound of a metal or metalloid on the surface of individual phosphor particles. The method involves wetting each of the individual particles with a polymer solution including a polymer in a solvent base, the polymer being capable of chelating ions of the metal or metalloid. The particles then are dried to produce a continuous coating of the polymer on each of the individual particles. The polymer-coated phosphor particles are suspended in a solution containing ions of the metal or metalloid and having a pH of at least 9 to produce chelation of the metal or metalloid ions by the polymer coating, to produce the adherent, continuous, conformal, non-particulate, metal- or metalloid-compound coating on the particle surfaces. Also described are a method for improving lumen maintenance of a lamp, a coated phosphor powder, and a phosphor-coating composition for coating an inner surface of a lamp envelope.

An aqueous coating suspension for a fluorescent lamp comprises particles of an alkaline earth chlorofluorophosphate phosphor activated by antimony and manganese, water, at least one water soluble binder, a defoaming agent, a surface active agent and a sufficient amount of ammonium chloride for improving lamp maintenance.

Aqueous phosphor coating suspension for lamps

A skin tanning fluorescent lamp having a coating of a uniform and homogeneous deflocculated physical mixture of a first and second phosphor where the first phosphor has a desired emission in the spectral region from about 320 to about 400 nanometers and the second phosphor has a desired emission in the spectral region from about 280 to about 320 nanometers, said first phosphor has a first isoelectric point at a first pH and the second phosphor has a second isoelectric point at a second pH. The first and said second pH form a range. The deflocculated coating is stabilized by deflocculating the first and second phosphors at a third pH sufficiently outside of range to produce a resulting coating consistently having desirable emission during production.
