Systems and methods for feedback relating to the stimulus itself as well as the effect of such stimulus on the patient are provided. Various examples may include therapies for vision disorders that can progress to blindness, such as macular degeneration or other diseases and disease processes.

System and methods for controlled electrical modulation for vision therapy

Methods, systems and apparatuses for delivering electrical or other therapy in the vicinity of the eye. One or more electrodes are positioned on or near the eye, such as contacting the superior or inferior eyelids, on the conjunctiva or medial or lateral canthus, on or inside the nose, or on the forehead. A remote or return electrode is optionally positioned elsewhere on the patient on the torso, neck, back, a limb, an extremity, on the back or side of the head, or near the ear, mandible or temple. A variety of pulse generator positions and support apparatuses are disclosed as well. The pulse generator is used to deliver one or more of therapy or diagnostic electrical pulses to the patient to address a condition of the eye.

Methods, systems and apparatuses for delivering electrical or other therapy in the vicinity of the eye, comprising eyepieces having a plurality of electrodes that are placed on the eyelid. Some examples are just eyepieces having a periphery that partly surrounds the eye, other examples fully surround the eye or include a temporal portion configured to extend to the temple of the user. Some examples also include a field that covers the eye to take the form of a goggle. Numerous configurations for power supply and therapy output are discussed.

Head worn apparatuses for vision therapy

A method and apparatus for performing a surgical procedure is provided. The surgical procedure may be a phacoemulsification procedure but other procedures may employ the techniques disclosed. The design includes sensing, within the surgical site, for a material change in fluid flow relative to a predetermined threshold. Upon sensing the fluid flow materially differs from the predetermined threshold, the design temporarily increases aspiration vacuum pressure to the surgical site above a predetermined upper threshold toward a maximum vacuum level. The design applies electrically generated disruptive energy, including but not limited to laser and/or relatively low power ultrasonic energy, to the surgical site from a first point in time measured from when aspiration vacuum pressure is above the predetermined upper threshold to a second point in time where pressure falls below a predetermined lower threshold.

The method and apparatus include applying energy during at least one pulsed energy on period, typically sufficient or intended to rapidly induce and beneficially employ transient cavitation. The method and apparatus include applying energy during at least one pulsed energy on period, comprising applying energy during a series of short burst periods, the short burst periods interspersed by short rest periods. Phacoemulsification apparatus includes a phacoemulsification handpiece having a needle and an electrical circuitry for ultrasonic vibrating the needle. A power source provides pulsed electrical power to the handpiece electrical circuitry and an input is provided for enabling a surgeon to select an amplitude of dislighted pulses and a pulse width. A control system and pulse duty cycle is provided for controlling the off duty cycle to insure heat dissipation before a subsequent pulse is activated, including a foot pedal switch.

In one aspect of the invention, a multi-purpose phacoemulsification needle comprises a needle body disposed about a centerline and has a lumen disposed therein. The lumen has a first cross-sectional area that is normal to the centerline. The needle further comprises a distal tip comprising an arcuate surface and a face with a port therein. The port has a second cross-sectional area in a plane generally parallel to the face and is in fluid communication with an internal cavity that has a third cross-sectional area normal to the centerline, the internal cavity being in fluid communication with the lumen. The needle is configured such that the third cross-sectional area is greater than either the first cross-sectional area or the second cross-sectional area. In another aspect of the invention, the needle comprises a plurality of fins projecting inwardly from the lumen.
