The frame of a personal, folding knife forms a compartment for receiving a knife blade having a hub pivoted to turn on the frame about an axis spanning the compartment. A locking block is manually slidable on the frame. A spring urges the lock block toward engagement in a notch in the blade hub.

Folding personal knife

A cork extractor for a cork in a bottle has a frame adapted to engage the bottle end around the axis of the cork and has a rod slidable and rotatable in the frame in line with the cork. A lever pivoted on the frame has a yielding pawl adapted individually to engage and successively to ride over each one of a series of stops on the rod, in this way incrementally extracting the cork with each actuation of the lever.

Corkscrew

The forks of a bicycle receive an axle having threaded ends. A tube surrounds the axle and carries ball bearings on which a wheel housing is rotatable with a space between the tube and the housing. Specially shaped seals engage the wheel housing and the tube between the ball bearings to keep lubricant out of the space between the seals. A special lever lock on one end of the axle cooperates with a nut on the other end of the axle to draw together the parts engaged with the axle, the tube and the housing.

Bicycle hub constructions and lubrication thereof

A wrist band holds a base containing a rotor having bores effective to hold pellets. Upon manual rotating of the periphery of the rotor relative to the base, the pellets are lifted or partially ejected for easy individual grasping by the user.

Projectile magazine

A knife for personal use includes a frame of two substantially identical frame plates held in registering parallelism by a spacer pinned in position. The frame plates have generally circular openings therethrough in alignment on a transverse axis. The openings each depart from circularity by including one and preferably two extended pockets. A blade at one end having an identical opening and a pocket or pockets has such end disposed between the plates and pivotally held therein by a flanged, threaded sleeve passing through the openings and secured by a ring nut. The sleeve at the flange end has a cross slot to define sleeve pockets registering with the plate and blade pockets. A headed bolt extends reciprocably and yieldably through the sleeve and at one end has a cross bar adapted in one position to seat in the blade pockets, in at least one of the plate pockets and in the sleeve pockets. A spring urges the bolt into that one position, but the bolt can be displaced to shift the bolt cross bar out of the blade pocket or pockets.

Pivoting blade knife

A hand knife has a removable blade. Side plates are spaced apart on opposite sides of a main frame having a rectangular socket in one end thereof. One side plate has a non-circular aperture therein and the other side plate has a circular opening therein. A pin is movable on a transverse axis relative to the main frame and has a non-circular portion in the aperture and a circular portion in the opening. A blade has an exteriorly rectangular end slidable in a predetermined direction to fit the socket. The end interiorly has a keyhole opening, the circular portion of which fits the larger, circular part of the pin and the rectangular portion of which is open ended in the predetermined direction and fits the smaller, non-circular portion of the pin. A spring normally urges the circular portions into interengagement. A button on the pin, when pressed, overcomes the spring and moves the non-circular portion into sliding engagement with the rectangular portion of the keyhole opening. The blade can then be moved in the predetermined direction relative to the main frame. In another form, a springy lever on the main frame is movable out of engagement with a notch in the blade to release the blade for rotation about the pin to a position in which the lever indexes against the socket end of the blade.

A release mechanism adapted for coupling parachute canopy riser straps to parachute harnesses is described wherein the male and female members of the mechanism are held together by two axially aligned bolt elements (a broken bolt) disposed in a common coupling passageway defined through the male and female members. An integral electronic water-activated energizing mechanism drives the two element broken-bolt longitudinally in the coupling passageway allowing the male and female members of the mechanism to separate whereby one of the bolt elements stays with the female member and the other bolt element stays with the male member. The described release mechanism further includes protective cover means for isolating sensing electrodes of the electronic water-activated energizing mechanism from the external environment prior to deployment of the parachute canopy.

Broken-bolt release mechanism

A gas-actuated release system is incorporated into a conventional ejection seat of an aircraft for freeing a pilot from his survival gear which could hinder his escape from the aircraft in a ground emergency. The system includes fail-safe features which prevent its operation when the pilot ejects from the aircraft via the ejection seat system. Flexible gas lines between the survival gear and the ejection seat are equipped with tension release connectors which pull apart upon separation of the pilot and survival gear from the ejection seat after ejection from the aircraft.

Gas-actuated emergency pilot release system

A knife for personal use has a liner made up of a pair of parallel walls spaced apart along a transverse axis at right angles to the longitudinal extent of the walls. A hollow hub extends along the axis and abuts bearing surfaces in the walls and also abuts a bearing surface in a blade disposed between the walls. The hub has at least a first notch extending radially of the axis. A second notch in one of the walls extending radially of the axis is adapted to register with the first notch. A third notch in the blade is adapted to register radially of the axis with the first and second notches. A thimble-like detent is mounted for axial movement relative to and partially within the hub. A key projects radially from the detent and has an axial extent effective in one axial position of the detent to lie wholly within the third notch and in another axial position of the detent to occupy a position lying within the second and third notches simultaneously. A spring preferably housed within the detent and the hub urges the detent into a projected position.
