A location or other description of the source of a transmission is inserted into the communication as a prefix to transmitter data. A multi-format receiver emits a sequence of different handshakes until the transmitter begins to respond. The receiver stores the prefix and a descriptor of the last handshake prior to the transmitter response. Subsequent signals with a stored prefix are greeted immediately with the stored associated handshake.

A display controller interacts with a plurality of time recorders and time actuators such that the display controller displays the time recorded in a plurality of time recorders, and controls the predetermined sequence of output states in a plurality of time actuators. Time recorders and time actuators of small size and low power consumption result from the use of this invention.

A correlation detector for detecting the presence of tones uses an improved circuit for finding the square root of the sum of the squares consisting of a two phase to multiphase converter and a magnitude comparator. The frequency response is extended to DC frequency. An improved multiplier is also described which results in very small DC offsets and provides for cancellation of whatever small DC offset which may be generated. Use of the improvements results in a monolithically integrable correlation detector.
