An anti-fogging facemask for preventing fogging of the wearer's glasses or goggles is described herein. The anti-fogging facemask includes an outer facemask and an inner facemask. The inner facemask is attached to the outer facemask. The inner facemask provides a barrier to prevent exhaled air from traveling through the upper end of the facemask. The inner facemask directs exhaled air downwards. The outer facemask forms a seal at an upper portion of the wearer's nose. The facemask may be configured to serve as a CO2 concentrating mask for temporary relief of allergic rhinitis symptoms.

Anti-fogging facemask

A passive thermal management system and methods of using a thermoresponsive hydrogel coating configured to autonomously switch between a heating state and a cooling state based on ambient temperature. At temperature greater than a lower critical solution temperature of the thermoresponsive hydrogel, the thermoresponsive hydrogel coating becomes solar reflective and has enhanced radiative cooling ability to achieve daytime radiative cooling. At temperatures less than the lower critical solution temperature, the thermoresponsive hydrogel coating becomes transparent to facilitate absorption of solar radiation by sun absorber.

Passive thermal management using thermoresponsive hydrogel

A method of decomposing a cured aromatic epoxy resin uses a molten salt bath at less than about 350° C. The molten salt bath includes a plurality of alkali metal hydroxides. The cured aromatic epoxy resin can be in intimate physical contact with a metal or alloy. The cured aromatic epoxy resin can be patterned by a lithographic method. The lithographic method can be multibeam interference lithography to form a three-dimensional photonic crystal template on a conductive substrate for electrodeposition of metal. Contacting the three-dimensional photonic crystal template with the electrodeposited metal with the molten salt bath can form a metal matrix device displaying a periodic pattern that is the inverse of the periodic pattern of the decomposed three-dimensional photonic crystal template.

SU-8 etching technique using molten salt

A method to control the density of a three-dimensional photonic crystal template involves changing the irradiation time from at least four laser beams to yield a periodic percolating matrix of mass and voids free of condensed matter from a photoresist composition. The photoresist composition includes a photoinitiator at a concentration where the dose or irradiation is controlled by the irradiation time and is less than the irradiation time that would convert all photoinitiator to initiating species such that the density of the three-dimensional photonic crystal template differs for different irradiation times. A deposition of reflecting or absorbing particles can be patterned on the surface of the photoresist composition to form a template with varying densities above different areas of the substrate.

Controlling porosity of an interference lithography process by fine tuning exposure time

A component with a reflective substrate, a photoresist layer disposed on the reflective substrate, and a light diffusing layer sandwiched between the reflective substrate and the photoresist layer is provided. The light diffusing layer includes an outer metal oxide layer with an outer rough surface configured to diffuse laser light during laser interference lithography of the photoresist layer. The outer metal oxide is also configured to be reduced to a conductive metallic layer during electroplating of the substrate. The outer metal oxide layer includes a plurality of elongated light diffusing elements extending in an outward direction from the substrate such that the outer rough surface diffuses at least 90% of laser light during the laser interference lithography of the photoresist layer.

Electrodeposition compatible anti-reflection coatings for laser interference lithography applications

A method to form a three-dimensional photonic crystal template with a gradient structure involves irradiating a photoresist composition of a thickness of at least 15 &#x3bc;m from at least four laser beams to yield a periodic patterned with a percolating matrix of mass in constructive volumes of a cured photoresist composition and destructive volumes of voids free of condensed matter where the proportion of constructive volume displays a gradient from the irradiated surface to the substrate after development. For a given light intensity, photoinitiator concentration in the photoresist composition, and a given thickness, by irradiating for a relatively short period, a three-dimensional photonic crystal template displaying a gradient having greater constructive volume proximal the air interface forms and a relatively long irradiation period results in a gradient having greater constructive volume proximal the substrate.

Graded pore structure without phase mask

Performance of a thermal lithium battery is improved by improving the ion-transport characteristics of a solid lithium iodide electrolyte. The lithium iodide lattice of the solid electrolyte includes defects that improve the ion-transport characteristics of the solid lithium iodide electrolyte. In one example, the defects are due to the introduction of nanoparticles that result in grain boundary defects. The defects resulting at the grain boundaries with the nanoparticles improve the ion transport characteristics of the electrolyte. In another example, defects originating from the synthesis process are pinned by the presence of nanoparticles and/or the reinforcing structure. In another example, the defects are aliovalent substitution defects. A cation that is aliovalent to the lithium cation (Li), such as a barium cation (Ba), creates an aliovalent substitution defect in the lithium iodide lattice. In order to maintain charge neutrality in the lattice, two lithium cations are replaced by a single barium cation creating the defect in the lattice.

Molten fluid electrode apparatus with solid lithium iodide electrolyte having improved lithium ion transport characteristics

A method for forming an assembly is provided. The method includes depositing a colloidal template onto a substrate, wherein the colloidal template is porous, depositing a metal layer onto and within the colloidal template, depositing a cap structure onto the colloidal template opposite of the substrate, and removing the colloidal template from between the substrate and the cap structure to form a metal inverse opal structure disposed therebetween. The method continues by depositing an electrical isolation layer in contact with the cap structure opposite the metal inverse opal structure, and attaching the electrical isolation layer to a cooling device.

Systems and methods of forming power electronic assemblies with cooling channels and integrated electrodes

An ocular device is disclosed along with methods for the employment thereof. In one aspect, a device for placement into a lacrimal punctum or conjunctival sac of a person includes one or more sensor materials responsive to one or more components of the chemical composition of the person's tears. Each sensor material is configured to present a tear-based color from a plurality of tear-based colors indicative of a medical condition of the person. In some embodiments, phenylboronic acid could be employed as a sensor material(s). In some embodiments, material(s) emitting radiation when excited by other radiation could be employed as a sensor material. In another aspect, methods for employing the ocular device are disclosed.

Ocular devices and methods for the employment thereof

A method of forming a textured surface layer along a substrate that includes disposing a plurality of polymer spheres on a surface of the metal substrate, and electroplating the metal substrate at a current density to deposit a metal layer along a body of each of the plurality of polymer spheres disposed on the surface of the metal substrate. The metal layer does not extend above a top surface of the plurality of polymer spheres. The method further includes removing the plurality of polymer spheres from the metal layer to form the textured surface defined by a size and shape of the plurality of polymer spheres.

Methods of forming electronic assemblies with textured surfaces using low current density electroplating

Embodiments of the disclosure relate to methods for forming a flat surface MIO structure for bonding and cooling electronic assemblies. In one embodiment, the method includes providing a plurality of particles on a surface of a base substrate. A metal is then deposited onto the plurality of particles up to a desired level to form a metal layer such that the plurality of particles is partially covered by the metal layer. An adhesive member is then applied to the plurality of particles exposed above the metal layer. Finally the adhesive member is pulled to remove individual particles of the plurality of particles that are exposed above the metal layer.

Methods for forming a flat surface MIO structure

A device includes an optic in an at least partially rigid scaffold. The scaffold is permeated, at least temporarily during a writing process, by writable media. The optic may be written into a writable volume in the scaffold defined by the writable media. The optic may be written by exposing the writable media to incident light to cause a material property change in the writable media within the writable volume.

A method for forming a flow channel in a MIO structure includes positioning a plurality of sacrificial spheres along a base substrate, heating a region of the plurality of sacrificial spheres above a melting point of the plurality of sacrificial spheres, thereby fusing the plurality of sacrificial spheres together and forming a solid channel, electrodepositing material between the plurality of sacrificial spheres and around the solid channel, removing the plurality of sacrificial spheres to form the MIO structure, and removing the solid channel to form the flow channel extending through the MIO structure.

Methods for forming flow channels in metal inverse opal structures

A method of forming an inverse opal structure along a substrate that includes depositing polymer spheres along the substrate and electroplating the substrate and spheres at a first current density to form a first solid metal layer such that the spheres are raised from the substrate. The method includes electroplating the substrate and the spheres at a second current density to diffuse metals from the substrate and deposit the metal about the spheres. The second current density is greater than the first current density. The method includes electroplating the substrate and spheres to form a second solid metal layer disposed over the spheres, and removing the spheres to form the inverse opal structure disposed between the first and second solid metal layers. The first and second solid metal layers define planar interface surfaces disposed over a porous structure of the inverse opal structure.

Methods of forming electronic assemblies with inverse opal structures using variable current density electroplating

An aluminized metallic scaffold for high temperature applications comprises a porous non-refractory alloy structure including a network of interconnected pores extending therethrough. The porous non-refractory alloy structure comprises a transition metal phase and an aluminide phase, and portions of the porous non-refractory alloy structure between interconnected pores have a thickness no greater than about 500 nm. A method of making an aluminized metallic scaffold for high-temperature applications comprises introducing aluminum into a surface of a porous metallic structure at an elevated temperature. The porous metallic structure comprises a transition metal and has a network of interconnected pores extending therethrough, where portions of the porous metallic structure between interconnected pores have a thickness no greater than about 500 nm. As the aluminum is introduced into the surface and diffusion occurs, an aluminide phase is formed, resulting in a porous non-refractory alloy structure comprising the aluminide phase and a transition metal phase.
