An implant injection system and method for introducing a bone implant material into a patient's bone to serve as an anchor or to fill a void in the bone. The system and method provide a quantity of meltable material which is melted in situ so that the melted material can flow and diffuse into, and be anchored to, the cancellous bone portion beneath the cortical bone layer. The flowing of the bone implant material can be accomplished by a heater located at the distal end of the implant injection system. The implant material may be provided in multiple layers with an inner layer having a lower flowing temperature than the outer layers. There can also be a looped suture that passes though the meltable material, with the free ends of the suture extending outwardly to be tied to soft tissue to affix the soft tissue to the bone.

Method and injection system for bone tissue implant

A tissue fixation system including a delivery tube and an elongated fastener with a loop at a proximal end and a distal end. A proximal end of an elongated curved needle is attached to the delivery tube. A distal end of the needle is configured to penetrate tissue. The needle includes an open channel sized to receive the elongated fastener with the loop located near the proximal end of the elongated curved needle and the distal end of the elongated fastener located near the distal end of the elongated curved needle. A capture needle is slidably positioned in the delivery tube to slide through the loop in the proximal end of the elongated fastener. The capture needle is configured to grasp the distal end of the elongated fastener and pull the distal end of the elongated fastener through the loop to cinch the elongated fastener.

Filamentous tissue implant

Apparatus for cutting a fishing line, said apparatus including a hollow shaft having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen extending therebetween; a slot formed in said hollow shaft and communicating with said lumen; and a cutter shaft movably disposed within said lumen so as to selectively cross said slot, whereby to cut a fishing line disposed in said slot.

Method and apparatus for joining a fishing line to another fishing component, for adjusting the buoyancy of fishing components, and for cutting a fishing line

A hand-held device for joining fishing line segments of monofilament, fluorocarbon, and/or braid lines of similar or differing sizes or combinations or securing hooks or other components to at least one line. The device includes an encasement for orienting the fishing line segments in a closed chamber in close, non-contacting orientation. A material is injected into the closed chamber to encase the lines. This material can be adhesive material or a flowable polymer material having a melting temperature lower than the line segments to be bonded. A pre-formed, flexible polymer sheath is used to retain the line segments in the chamber. A heater heats the polymer sheath within the encasement to allow the polymer to flow and encase the line segments without melting the line segments. Bonding of the line segments can be achieved without melting, abrading, compressing, or impairing the integrity the line segment(s) to be encased.

Materials, methods and devices for joining lines

Prosthesis, tools and surgical methods treat joint instability by avoiding loosening over time. A shoulder prosthesis includes a humeral member with a humeral joint surface and a humeral fixation member and a glenoid member comprising a glenoid body with a glenoid joint surface, and a glenoid fixation member attaching the glenoid body to a scapula. The glenoid fixation member may be attached orthogonally to the scapula. A dampener may be included to absorb loads that may loosen one or more components of the prosthesis.

Implantable shoulder prostheses

An instrument is disclosed including: a top jaw member extending between a proximal end and a distal end and including a first top anchor target slot and a second top anchor target slot; a bottom jaw member extending between a proximal end and a distal end and including a first bottom anchor target slot and a second bottom anchor target slot; and a joint member connected to the proximal ends of the top jaw member and the bottom jaw member.

Double row fixation system, medial row anchor placement system

A fused loop of an elongated material, such as a surgical suture, and apparatus for making the loop. Portions of one or more segments to be joined together are fused in a welding process to form a welded joint. The shear area of the fused portion of the joint determines the strength of the joint and is thus preferably relatively large. Various configurations for the welding apparatus facilitate the creation of relatively large fused portions of the joint by maximizing contact between at least one of the welding members of the apparatus and at least one of the segments to be joined.

Fused loop of filamentous material and apparatus for making same

A suture anchor for securing soft tissue to bone may include a threaded body, a head extending along a longitudinal axis, and a plurality of eyelets that extend though the anchor head and that are each configured to receive a suture. The eyelets are offset from one another along an axis that is transverse to the longitudinal axis of the suture anchor. Each eyelet may have a desired shape and cross section. Surgical kits including one or more suture anchors and one or more surgical tools are also described.

A knotless suture device including at least one fusible suture for securing or ligating living tissue structures. The device also includes a generally U-shape fusible coupling member for receiving end portions of the fusible suture. Energy applied to fusible portions of the coupling member cause localized heating and plastic flow so as to fuse the coupling member and the end portion of the suture together. The coupling member can include one or more energy directors on a contact surface to direct and focus energy to particular regions so as to efficiently effect coupling member-to-suture welding.

Coupling member for knotless sutures and ligatures

The invention provides a particle comprising a surface, wherein a portion of the surface is capable of emitting electromagnetic radiation and another portion of the surface is capable of emitting a differential electromagnetic radiation (either different intensity, different frequency or no radiation), and wherein the arrangement of said portions of the surface defines a spatially distributed code for identifying the particle. The invention also provides method of manufacturing a particle having an identifying code comprising providing a particle with a functionalized surface which comprises functional binding moieties and selectively removing a plurality of the functional binding moieties from the surface to create a pattern of functionalized and differentially-functionalized zones on the surface. Various liquid-based assay methods employing the particle of the invention and a kit comprising the particle of the invention are also disclosed.

Assay based on particles, which specifically bind with targets in spatially distributed characteristic patterns

A welding apparatus that includes a first member having a first suture-contacting surface, a second member having a second suture-contacting surface, and a device for moving the first member relative to the second member to define a gap between the respective suture-contacting surfaces. The first member is capable of vibrating and delivering mechanical energy at ultrasonic frequencies. The second member is stationary relative to the first member. A fixture element is adapted to receive and maintain two or more segments of a material to be welded in a predetermined alignment in the gap between the first and second surfaces of the first and second members during a welding operation. According to another aspect of the invention, an ultrasonic welding apparatus includes first and second members with patterned first and second suture-contacting surfaces. The patterned surfaces can be complementary or non-complementary and the surface patterns on each member may vary in either a periodic or a non-periodic manner.

An implantable access device including a port for receiving and guiding a filament, such as a needle, into an entry region of the device. The port includes a plate for receiving a filament, and at least two walls extending upwardly from the plate. The walls are shaped and positioned to guide the filament moving between opposing first and second ends of the plate through an entry region defined between the walls at the second end of the plate. Preferably, a greatest distance between the walls is at least five times greater than a height of the walls, so that the port provides a large filament strike area, yet has a small overall height. In addition, a greatest distance between the ends of the plate is also preferably at least five times greater than the height of the walls, to further increase the filament strike area without increasing height.
