A flow management device comprises an outer chamber with an inlet arranged to receive a flow in a first flow direction and an outlet arranged to provide the flow in a second flow direction different from the first direction, and a duct arranged within the chamber, the duct having a first end configured to receive the flow from the inlet and a second end configured to release the flow towards the outlet, wherein a cross-sectional area of the duct increases towards each of the first and second ends of the duct.

Methods and systems are provided for an engine housing assembly. In one example, an engine housing assembly comprises an engine housing component, the housing component at least partially defining a first bore for receiving a first shaft and at least partially defining a second bore for receiving a second shaft; and a reinforcement member cast into the housing, the reinforcement member having a lower coefficient of thermal expansion than the housing component, wherein the reinforcement member at least partially surrounds the first and second bores. Methods and systems are provided for a boosted engine system having an engine arranged to receive boosted air from a variable geometry turbocharger and an electrically powered compressor arranged in parallel with the turbocharger. During temporary high torque demands above a predefined level, the electrically powered compressor may be used to supplement the flow of boosted air from the turbocharger. Additionally, a recirculation circuit around the electrically powered compressor may be provided to build up pressure in the electrically powered compressor before it is connected to the engine so as to minimize fluctuations in engine boost pressure upon start-up of the electrically powered compressor.

A cooling system for an internal combustion engine is provided. The cooling system comprises: a cooling passage provided within an engine housing of the engine, the cooling passage configured to carry a bulk flow of coolant to cool the engine housing, wherein the bulk flow of coolant within the cooling passage is driven by convection or a pump; and one or more additional cooling passages provided within the engine housing, each configured to introduce a flow of coolant into the cooling passage; one or more additional cooling passage pumps configured to pump coolant within the additional cooling passages; wherein the engine housing comprises one or more high temperature regions, which are at a higher temperature than one or more low temperature regions of the engine housing; and wherein the additional cooling passages are configured to direct the introduced coolant towards the one or more high temperature regions.

Methods and systems are provided for an internal combustion engine having at least two cylinders configured in such a way that they form two groups, at least one cylinder of a first group being a cylinder which is operational in the event of a partial deactivation of the engine, and at least one cylinder of a second group being formed as a load-dependently switchable cylinder. An inlet-side throttle element is provided with at least one intake line of the switchable cylinder, by means of which the size of the flow cross section of the intake line can be varied, whereby the charge-air flow rate supplied to the deactivated cylinder in the event of a partial deactivation of the engine can be adjusted. Each outlet opening of a load-dependently switchable cylinder is equipped with a partially variable valve drive, with an outlet valve which opens or shuts off the outlet opening.
