Apparatus for heating the cabin of a vehicle operated by an internal combustion engine. The apparatus includes a pump for circulating hot oil from the engine sump and a heat exchanger for heating cabin air with heat from the oil. A throttle valve is mounted downstream from the pump to heat the oil and provide a source of heat particularly during warm-up periods. Also the apparatus includes an adjustable flow apportioning valve for selectively and adjustably dividing the flow of oil downstream from the throttle valve into two separate streams. The heat from one of the separate streams is then recycled directly into the oil at the pump suction. This arrangement maximizes the efficient useage of the heat generated in the throttle for cabin heating purposes. Also disclosed is an improved throttle valve for use in connection with the heating apparatus.

The hydrodynamic coupling is thermostatically regulated or controlled by oil flow supplied thereto, as a result of a filling thereof as a function of the temperature of a structural port, or of the exhaust gas, or of the heated cooling air. In order to adapt to the atmospheric air pressure, the oil filling of the hydraulic coupling is additionally supplied with oil via an additional filling line controlled by a barometric diaphragm and a regulator, with the hydrodynamic coupling being dimensioned larger for receiving this additional filling quantity.

An air-cooled internal combustion engine equipped with a hydronamic retarder is combined with a cooling system for the hydronamic retarder fluid. The system comprises a cooling air shroud for directing cooling air past the engine in cooling relationship thereto and a cooling air fan for pushing air through the shroud. The system further includes a retarder oil cooler located upstream from the fan remote from the engine and circuit means are provided for circulating retarder oil through the cooler. Exhaust valves are provided in the shroud and are positioned for diverting at least a portion of the cooling air flow from the shroud when the valves are open. Thus, the overall pressure loss of the system may be decreased and the total flow of cool air through the cooler may correspondingly be increased to increase the cooling efficiency in the cooler.

A cooling system for an air cooled vehicle drive having a supercharged internal combustion engine, a transmission, a hydrodynamic brake (retarder), and a plurality of heat exchangers. The media which are to be cooled are at least partially in mutual heat exchange. Cooling oil or fluid ducts for the retarder or transmission oil and/or lubricating oil of the internal combustion engine pass entirely or at least partially through a supercharger intercooler or charging air cooler. The retarder or lubricating oil is cooled in a heat exchanger which is acted upon by cooling air.
