A therapeutic applicator and method may include a wand portion and a module coupled to the wand portion. The module may have a body section and a recess positioned within the body section. The body section may include a prismatic member made of a transparent material and the body section may further include a convex surface. The convex surface may provide a magnification of a view that includes a region surrounding the recess. A radiation source may be positioned within the recess. The body section may have a thickness greater than a diameter of the radiation source which is sufficient to attenuate radiation being emitted from the radiation source while the transparent material of the body section allows visibility of a treatment site that is adjacent to the radiation source. The magnification of the view may fall in range between about 1.1 times to 50.0 times an unmagnified view.

A conformal system and method for radiation shielding may include a container made of a first material that defines a closed volume. The closed volume may provide a seal for a shielding filler material. The shielding filler material may be provided within the closed volume defined by the container. The shielding filler material may include a second material different from the first material. Both the first and second materials may provide shielding against beta particle or low energy gamma radiation. The container may define an aperture such that an object may pass through the aperture, while the closed volume maintains its seal for the shielding filler material. The container may be used with surgical procedures where radiation is emitted as a treatment for living tissue.

Conformal system for therapeutic beta or low-energy gamma radiation shielding

A method and system may include a therapeutic agent having a radioactive source enclosed by a container. The container may be placed within a cavity of a medical device for treating animal tissue. The method and system allows a radioactive source to be manufactured in such a manner so as to control and spatially modulate the delivery of radiation doses to a treatment area of animal tissue, such as for tissue of humans. From the container, radiation doses and/or a radiation field are produced by the radiation source. The geometry and size of the radiation doses are controlled by the geometry of the container and the geometry of the radiation source as well as the type, number, and geometry of holes/slots in either the source material and/or a surface of the container.
