An electronic trip unit for a circuit breaker includes a programmed microprocessor and a module plug in removable signal communication with the microprocessor. The module plug includes a program identifier. The microprocessor recognizes the program identifier and accesses a program of a plurality of programs external to the module plug based on the program identifier. The microprocessor responds to the program to perform a function identified by the module plug. The function identifiable by the module plug includes a communications function, a load monitoring function, a non-tripping ground fault alarm function, a flag function, or any combination thereof.

Method and apparatus for accessing and activating accessory functions of electronic circuit breakers

An electronic trip unit for a circuit breaker includes: a microprocessor, the microprocessor programmed to determine an overcurrent condition of the circuit breaker; a nonvolatile memory in electronic communication with the microprocessor; a module plug releasably engaged with the microprocessor, the module plug includes an identification register; wherein the microprocessor reads the identification register, the identification register including an identification number; wherein the microprocessor accesses one of a plurality of programs in the nonvolatile memory based the identification number; and wherein the one of a plurality of programs instructs the microprocessor to perform steps necessary to operate one or more functions of the module plug.

A utility meter label support and antenna are described. The label support supports a product label and an antenna for radio frequency-based, remote meter reading capability, all within standard type utility meter housing. In one embodiment, the label support is fabricated from molded plastic and includes a plurality of support members connected to a substantially planar member. The support members are configured to insert into openings in the printed circuit board of the utility meter. The antenna is embedded in a flexible circuit and mounted on the planar member. A conducting element is embedded in a portion of the flexible circuit and is configured to physically and electrically connect the antenna to a transceiver on the circuit board. A product label is mounted on the label support and may be viewed through a transparent window in the meter housing.

A circuit breaker trip unit enclosure is adapted to receive rotary knobs that are limited in rotation in proportion to the circuit breaker short circuit rating. The externally-accessible rotary knobs extend within the enclosure to contact with a potentiometer affixed to the circuit breaker trip unit printed circuit board. A stop member is inserted within the enclosure access opening to detent the rotary knob shank that extends through the access opening.

This invention relates to a high ampere-rated circuit breaker which meets the electrical code requirements of the world market. The circuit breaker electronic trip unit is contained within a recess in the circuit breaker cover and is interlocked with the circuit breaker operating mechanism to articulate the operating mechanism upon removal. The accessory units are contained within an adjoining accessory compartment recess within the circuit breaker cover. Rejection pins on the accessories insure that the correct accessories are connected within the corresponding accessory compartments.

A molded case circuit breaker containing a digital trip unit is field-tested for both electronically-induced as well as mechanically-induced test conditions by means of a portable test kit unit. The test kit circuit components are contained within a miniature test plug that temporarily connects with the circuit breaker trip unit by insertion within the rating plug receptacle formed within the circuit breaker cover. A compact power supply plug is received within the test plug to provide operating power to the circuit breaker trip unit components and associated accessories.

An integrated protection unit is a circuit breaker which includes basic overcurrent protection facility along with selective electrical accessories. A molded plastic accessory access cover secured to the integrated protection unit cover protects the accessory components contained within the circuit breaker cover from the environment. A molded plastic rating plug enclosure houses the molded case circuit breaker rating plug printed circuit board. The rating plug enclosure is inserted within the circuit breaker cover and is adapted for removal from the circuit breaker cover by means of a special extractor tool. Access means for connecting a test jack with the circuit breaker trip unit printed circuit board and visual access means for an indicating diode are formed within the cover of the rating plug enclosure.

The neutral excitation and differential current transformers of a ground fault circuit breaker are arranged for automated assembly onto the signal processor circuit board to complete the signal processor module prior to insertion within the ground fault circuit breaker housing. Electrical interconnection between the transformers is made by a unitary conducting strap having means therein for receiving the circuit neutral conductor. The completely assembled signal processor module is connected with the circuit breaker components by means of a single wire.

A modular ground fault circuit breaker is provided by the arrangement of a ground fault module and signal processor module operatively connected with a circuit breaker module. EAch of the modular components are individually tested and calibrated prior to assembly. The circuit breaker module consists of an automated residential circuit breaker modified to receive the ground fault and signal processor modules.
