A method of forming a graphitic carbon body employs compression and resistance heating of a stock blend of a carbon material and a binder material. During molding of the body, resistance heating is accompanied by application of mechanical pressure to increase the density and carbonization of the resulting preform body. The preform can then be subjected to a graphitization temperature to form a graphite article.

High porosity/low permeability graphite bodies and process for the production thereof

A system is provided for ultrasonic inspection of cylindrical carbon articles, such as electrodes of the type utilized in electric arc steel making furnaces. An inspection station is provided for receiving the electrode in a fixed longitudinal location and for rotating the electrode about the longitudinal axis of the electrode. Master and slave robots are provided, and each carries a pair of transducers arranged to engage the electrode at circumferentially spaced positions about the electrode. Each pair of transducers is carried on a yoke. The inspection station rotates the electrode while the master and slave robots o each carry their associated pair of transducers along approximately one half the length of the electrode.

Electrode inspection system

A gas diffusion electrode having a progressive change in active material concentration over its thickness. Also, a method of producing a gas diffusion electrode by applying a finely divided wetproofing mixture and a plurality of different finely divided active mixtures in superimposed layers to a current collector, the layers being arranged in progressively increasing weight proportion of active material, and thereafter pressing and forming a porous electrode.

Method of producing a gas diffusion electrode

A process for making an improved electrode by providing on a conductive current distributor layers of active and hydrophobic materials, uniting these materials together with sufficient force to lock them together and subsequently roll-bonding the resulting preformed assembly to form the finished electrode.
