During diode emulation mode, a controller controls a magnitude of current supplied by an inductor of a power converter to produce an output voltage that powers a dynamic load. In response to detecting that a magnitude of the current crosses a threshold level, the controller: i) deactivates a first switch such as a low-side switch of the power converter, and ii) starts a timer. The controller monitors a magnitude of the output voltage following deactivation of the first switch. Via the timer, the controller measures a time duration between a time of starting the timer and a trigger event of the output voltage falling below a setpoint reference voltage. In response to the output voltage falling below the setpoint reference, the controller i) selects a setting of a pulse width as a function of the time duration, and ii) activates a second switch, such as a high-side switch of the power converter, for the selected pulse width.

Power system and ripple voltage reduction

A power supply includes a power converter, a reference voltage generator, and a controller. During operation, the power converter produces an output voltage to power a load. The reference voltage generator (such as a voltage mode amplifier circuit) generates a floor reference voltage, a magnitude of which varies as a function of the output voltage. The controller compares an output voltage feedback signal (derived from the output voltage) to the floor reference voltage to produce control output to control timing of activating switches in the power converter to maintain the output voltage within a desired voltage range.

Reference voltage control in a power supply

A power supply includes a power converter, a reference voltage generator, and a controller. During operation, the power converter produces an output voltage to power a load. The reference voltage generator (such as a voltage mode amplifier circuit) generates a floor reference voltage, a magnitude of which varies as a function of the output voltage error. The controller compares an output voltage feedback signal (derived from the output voltage) to the floor reference voltage to produce control output to control timing of activating switches in the power converter to maintain the output voltage within a desired voltage range.

A one cycle power factor correction converter circuit comprising a switch for controlling a DC output voltage of the converter circuit, the switch being switched by a drive signal having a frequency determined by a clock signal; the converter circuit being provided with a DC input voltage and producing the DC output voltage, the DC input voltage being rectified from an AC input; a controller circuit for controlling an on-time or off-time of the switch to set the output voltage and to achieve power factor correction at the AC input; the controller circuit comprising an error amplifier receiving a feedback voltage from the output of the converter circuit and a reference voltage and producing an error signal; a ramp generator receiving the error signal and generating a first ramp signal by integrating a signal related to the error signal; a pulse width modulation circuit receiving the first ramp signal and a signal related to the error signal and producing a pulse width modulated signal by comparing the first ramp signal and the signal related to the error signal; the pulse width modulated signal determining the on-time or off-time of the switch to control the output voltage with power factor correction; further comprising a circuit for terminating the first ramp signal when a predetermined inequality exists between the first ramp signal and a reference signal and for developing the clock signal from the first ramp signal.

Merged ramp/oscillator for precise ramp control in one cycle PFC converter

A switching voltage controller with improved rejection of supply voltage transients, wherein the switching of the voltage controller is controlled by sensing the current through an inductor to provide a current sense signal proportional to the sensed current and comparing the current sense signal voltage to the voltage of a peak signal and the voltage of a valley signal. An error amplifier provides a control signal proportional to the voltage difference between the output voltage of the voltage controller and a reference voltage source. The switching voltage controller provides for improved rejection of transients in the supply voltage by forcing the valley signal to be a first voltage differential .DELTA.' volts below the control signal and the peak signal to be a second voltage differential .DELTA.' volts above the control signal, where .DELTA.' and .DELTA.' are functions of the supply voltage to the voltage controller such that the rate of change of .DELTA.' and .DELTA.' with respect to the supply voltage are substantially equal to each other.
