A ram boring machine having a striking piston that is axially displaceable in a housing, of which the forward and backward movement is controlled by a control sleeve connected to a supply hose and which engages in a cylinder chamber of the striking piston, and by one or more corresponding control openings in the striking piston, wherein the control sleeve is loaded both axially and torsionally, has axial and rotational stops and is rotatable and axially displaceable in a guide sleeve arranged at the rear end of the housing.

Ram boring machine

A pressure-medium driven ram boring machine for boring in the earth, having an impact tip acted on by a percussion piston reciprocating in the machine housing, wherein the impact tip is arranged to be radially adjustable in the housing whereby controlled directional changes of the machine can be effected.

In a rammer for driving in pipes open in the direction of ramming, in which a piston, axially reciprocated in a housing having an impact head, imparts its thrust to the housing, making the impact head integral with the housing allows a shorter rammer to be used without loss of thrust.

In a pneumatic ram boring machine for laying pipelines without trenching, which is connected to a source of compressed air by a hose, a valve that suddenly opens automatically at a predetermined pressure is arranged upstream of the striker piston. On opening the valve a pressure wave results which reaches the impact piston almost undamped and prevents it from stopping at a dead center position and not starting.

In a ram boring machine for laying pipelines without trenching, a double blade that is axially moveable against a compression spring is housed in an impact tip and projects through slots in the impact tip. The double blade is struck by a striker piston and moves, during the breaking-up of an old pipe laid in the ground, substantially independently of the ram boring machine or of its housing. In this way substantially all the impact energy of the piston is used for the benefit of the breaking-up operation.

Apparatus for driving an open-ended pipe 7, which has a driving shoe 6 at its leading end, through the ground comprises a driving member 2, 3 to which percussive driving forces are applied by a driving mechanism. Instead of fitting the part 3 of the driving member directly into the rear end of the pipe 7 as is usual an intermediate component 8 is interposed between the pipe and the part 3. The component 8 has soil outlet openings 10 and a deflector 16 to allow soil which enters the pipe 7 through the shoe 6 as driving proceeds to pass through and out of the pipe without stopping the driving. The passage of the soil through the pipe 7 is assisted by water supplied under pressure through a pipe 11 to an annular duct 12 in the shoe 6, when the water flows inwards through nozzles 13 and then rearwards through the pipe 7 carrying the soil with it.

Apparatus for driving pipes through the ground

In an apparatus for driving open-ended pipes through the ground, a hollow intermediate piece having a truncated conical transition portion with outlet openings for the removal of soil, which is forced into the pipe during driving, is disposed between the rearward end of the pipe and a pneumatic rammer for driving the pipe.

An attachment for driving pipe wherein a plurality of concentric sleeves having diminishing diameters are arranged in driving engagement with a pipe end with a driving hammer operating to impart a driving force to the pipe, the sleeves being arranged to form a generally concial configuration such that the sleeves are in contact with each other at points which lie along lines of contact intersecting at the axis of the driving hammer to form an acute included angle.

A self-driven pneumatically operated ram borer for boring holes in the ground includes a casing containing a percussion piston and a control sleeve for controlling the supply of compressed air through a hose to cause the piston to reciprocate, is provided with a control tube which is rotatable to vary the porting of the borer to cause it to move either forwards or rearwards. The tube is rotated into either a forward position or a reverse position by means of a flexible shaft which extends from the casing within the hose. By enclosing the shaft within the hose, the shaft is protected and is not subject to friction against the wall of the hole bored by the borer or to jamming if the hole collapses. The borer can thus easily be controlled even when it has passed through a very long bore hole.

A self-propelled pneumatic ram boring device for boring holes in the ground comprises a percussion piston which is reciprocable in a housing, and a control sleeve which controls the forward and rearward movement of the piston by passing over radial control ports in the piston. In order to control the device to move either forwards or rearwards, without having to twist a hose which supplies air to the device as is usual, the control sleeve is rigidly fixed in position in the housing and has control ports to which air is supplied or not under the control of valve members and which are themselves remotely controlled by a second compressed air supply to the device, or electrically.

A method of boring holes in the ground, which holes are open at both ends, includes forming an open-ended pilot bore by means of a first self-propelled displacement hammer of smaller diameter. Next a cable is introduced through the pilot bore and then the diameter of the pilot bore is increased to form the hole by means of a second displacement hammer of greater diameter. The second displacement hammer is guided through the pilot bore by pulling it with the cable which for this purpose is attached to the leading end of the second hammer.

Method of boring holes which are open at both ends in the ground

A self-propelled pneumatically operated percussion boring apparatus for boring holes in the ground of the kind which includes a percussion piston which is reciprocated pneumatically in a tubular housing is provided with a control device for causing the apparatus to make either a forward movement or a return movement. The control device comprises a control sleeve which has air ports through its wall and over which a skirt of the piston passes as, in operation, the piston reciprocates. The skirt has ports which come into register with ports in the sleeve and the sleeve is fixed in position in the housing and has a control tube rotatably mounted within it. The control tube has one or more ports through its wall and compressd air for operating the apparatus is supplied through the control tube. The control tube is set in either one of two positions, in one of which the port or ports in the control tube are out of register with a port or ports in the sleeve and this causes the apparatus to move in one direction and in the second position the port or ports in the control tube are in register with the port or ports in the sleeve and this causes the apparatus to move in an opposite direction.

Pneumatically operated percussion boring apparatus

Selected chemical species in fluid media such as solutions, mixtures of liquids, and suspensions are crystallized by indirect cooling of the fluid media. Crystals are prevented from sticking to the heat exchange surface by pulsating the fluid with a component of pulsation parallel to the heat exchange surface. The crystals can then be separated from the residual fluid.

An earth boring assembly is provided with a hammer member at its leading end for impacting through an earth formation to form a boring therein. An expander cone is attached rearwardly of the hammer to expand the boring which has been formed by the hammer and drag pipes are connected to follow the hammer into the boring. Clamping means interposed between the expander cone and the drag pipe operate to automatically effect frictional locking engagement between the hammer and the drag pipe when the expander cone and the drag pipe are moved toward each other and to automatically release the frictional engagement when the members are moved away from each other. The clamping means may specifically comprise an annular slotted ring having wedge-shaped outer surfaces by means of which the ring is caused to become clamped and released about the hammer.
