An orthopaedic implant includes: a first porous ingrowth material region; a second porous ingrowth material region coupled to the first porous ingrowth material region; and an intermediate region disposed between the first porous ingrowth material region and the second porous ingrowth material region. The intermediate region has a stiffness that differs from at least one of the first porous ingrowth material region or the second porous ingrowth material region.

Adjusted stiffness orthopaedic implants and method of manufacture

A method of manufacturing multiple orthopaedic implants includes: producing a strip of material including a composite of a first porous ingrowth material and a second porous ingrowth material; forming a plurality of through-openings in the strip; and cutting a plurality of implant blanks from the strip, each of the implant blanks including at least one of the formed through-openings.

A tool for use with an orthopaedic implant includes: a tubular assembly including a tubular passage having a first end and a second end, the first end including a means for attachment to an implant body; a plug; and a plunger coupled to the plug. The tubular passage is configured to receive, via the second end, a material agent and the plunger coupled to the plug. The plunger is configured to slide through the tubular passage for expelling the material agent from the tubular passage into a load bearing member via the at least one first opening. The plunger is configured to rotate within the tubular passage for coupling the plug with the first opening to seal the first opening against expulsion of the material agent from the load bearing member via the first opening.

Orthopaedic implant with porous structural member

An orthopaedic implant includes an implant body having a first surface, a second surface opposite the first surface, and a cavity formed therein that extends through the first surface and the second surface. The implant body has a third surface with at least one first opening formed therethrough to the cavity. The at least one first opening includes an outer portion having an outer diameter and an inner portion having an inner diameter. The implant includes a load bearing member including a porous material held within the cavity. The outer portion of the at least one first opening is configured to couple to a tool for receiving, from the tool, a material agent, and the inner portion of the at least one first opening is configured to couple to a plug for preventing the material agent from exiting the porous material via the at least one first opening.

An orthopaedic implant includes a main body having a surface with at least one bonding feature, at least one porous material having a plurality of pores, and a bonding material placed in the plurality of pores of the at least one porous material and the at least one bonding feature to form a bond between the at least one porous material and the main body.

Implants with groove patterns and soft tissue attachment features

A method of manufacturing a tubular medical implant is provided. The method includes forming a hollow first tube with a first diameter and a first plurality of pores formed thereon and a hollow second tube with a second unstretched diameter and a second plurality of pores formed thereon. The second unstretched diameter is greater than the first diameter. At least a portion of the first tube slides within the second tube to create an overlapped area of the first tube and the second tube. The first tube and second tube are then bonded together in the overlapped area.

Method of manufacturing a tubular medical implant

An orthopedic implant includes an internal fixation device. The internal fixation device includes: an exterior surface; a threaded section including a reservoir and at least one threaded section channel fluidly communicating the reservoir with the exterior surface, each threaded section channel having an interior diameter and a length which is greater than the interior diameter; a head including a head channel fluidly communicating the reservoir with an exterior surface of the head, a channel diameter of the head channel being respectively larger than a largest interior diameter of each threaded section channel, the channel diameter of the head channel being the same as a large interior diameter of the reservoir; and a continuously tapering inner surface between the head channel and the reservoir.

Drug delivery implants

The present invention provides an orthopedic implant including a base device having a device surface and a fixation material attached to at least one portion of the device surface. The fixation material is configured to provide a minimally sufficient adhesive force to resist natural pull out caused by forces acting on the base device after implantation and bone growth. Also provided is a method of manufacturing an orthopedic implant. A base device with a device surface is provided and a minimally sufficient adhesive force, that can resist natural pull out caused by forces acting on the base device after implantation and bone growth, is determined. A proper amount of fixation material sufficient to provide an adhesive force equal to the minimally sufficient adhesive force is determined and fixation material is applied to the device. When the proper amount of fixation material is applied to the device surface, application is stopped.

Fixation of orthopaedic devices

A three-dimensional scaffold for a medical implant includes a plurality of layers bonded to each other. Each layer has a top surface and a bottom surface and a plurality of pores extending from the top surface to the bottom surface. Each layer has a first pore pattern of the pores at the top surface and a different, second pore pattern at the bottom surface. Adjacent surfaces of at least three adjacent layers have a substantially identical pore pattern aligning to interconnect the pores of the at least three adjacent layers to form a continuous porosity through the at least three adjacent said layers.

Porous tissue ingrowth structure

An orthopedic implant includes an implant body having a first surface with a first peak, a second surface opposite the first surface, and a cavity formed therein that extends through the first surface and second surface. The implant body is substantially non-porous. A load bearing member comprising a substantially porous material is held within the cavity. The load bearing member has a first contact surface that extends out of the cavity past the first peak of the first surface.

An orthopedic implant system includes an orthopedic implant implantable at a selected location within a corporeal body and configured for delivering at least one therapeutic agent to the corporeal body, the implant defining a reservoir and a plurality of channels, the reservoir configured for receiving the at least one therapeutic agent, the plurality of channels configured for conveying the at least one therapeutic agent from the reservoir to a treatment site relative to the corporeal body, the implant being at least one of an internal fixation device and a porous device.

An orthopedic implant system includes an external fixation device implantable at a selected location within a corporeal body and configured for delivering at least one therapeutic agent to the corporeal body. The external fixation device includes an implantable pin, a sheath coupled with the pin, a reservoir coupled with the sheath and a plurality of channels. The pin defines the plurality of channels. The reservoir is configured for receiving the at least one therapeutic agent. The plurality of channels are configured for conveying the at least one therapeutic agent from the reservoir to a treatment site relative to the corporeal body.
