A capping station is configured for storing a printhead during printer inactivity to preserve the operational status of the nozzles in the printhead. Each capping station has a housing having at least one wall and a floor configured to enclose a volume partially, and a plate having a textured surface that is positioned at a predetermined distance from a top surface of the at least one wall of the housing. The textured surface is made of a resilient material that has cells that contain flushing fluid. A printhead is pushed within the volume of the housing to engage the textured surface of the plate to press the flushing fluid into the faceplate of the printhead. The flushing fluid and the proximity of the textured surface keep ink on the faceplate and within the nozzles of the faceplate from drying.

A media transport system for conveying sheets of media along a process path extending from a media-uptake zone and thereafter through a print zone. The system includes a transport belt for holding the sheets of media generally flat via vacuum for ink jet printing. The media transport system includes a seamed vacuum transport belt, and a platen supporting the belt. The belt comprises a partially-conductive coating having a surface resistivity of from about 10to about 10ohms per square on a polymeric substrate. The partially-conductive coating comprises a polyester and a conductive component such as carbon black, and optionally includes a plasticizer and a leveling agent. The polymeric substrate is either a thermoplastic or a thermoset material.

A method for providing film-thickness analysis with a spectrophotometer includes configuring an illuminator to emit a light beam at a film deposited on a substrate surface, configuring a linear sensor to receive light reflecting off the deposited film on the substrate surface via a gradient index lens and a linear variable filter, and configuring a processor to determine thickness of the film based on spectral reflectivity of the film received from the linear sensor.

Provided is a system for providing spectral analysis with a spectrophotometer. The system includes an illuminator positioned adjacent to a carrier having a surface; a linear sensor positioned adjacent to the carrier; and a micropatterned optical filter is positioned between the linear sensor and the carrier. The illuminator is configured to emit light at a material disposed over the surface. The linear sensor is configured to receive the light from the illuminator.

An inkjet printer includes a first printhead and a second printhead in a print zone. A controller operates an actuator to move the first printhead to a first position to enable every inkjet in a plurality of inkjets in the first printhead to eject ink onto a surface of a print medium. The controller operates a first inkjet in the first printhead that overlaps with a second inkjet in the second printhead in a cross-process direction to eject ink from only one of the inkjets for each pixel of image data that corresponds to the location of the first and second inkjets in the cross-process direction.

Method and system for printhead alignment based on print medium width

An apparatus includes a conveyor that has a planar surface supporting sheets of media. A movable element is positioned adjacent the planar surface at an initial position. The initial position is a first distance from the surface approximately equal to the thickness of a sheet of media. The movable element moves in a first direction away from the surface and in a second direction toward the surface. An actuator is connected to the movable element. The actuator detects when the movable element moves in the first direction from the initial position. In response to the movable element moving in the first direction, the actuator moves the movable element in the second direction to a pushing position. The pushing position is between the initial position and the surface. After moving the movable element to the pushing position, the actuator allows the movable element to return to the initial position.

In accordance with various embodiments, there are printing apparatuses and methods of enhancing an image quality on a media. The method of enhancing an image quality on a media can include providing an ink-based halftone image on a media, wherein the halftone image can include an amount of noise. The method can also include depositing a transparent overcoat layer at least over the halftone image, wherein the transparent overcoat layer can include a major amount of cross-linkable resin and a minor amount of a photoinitiator. The method can further include embossing the transparent overcoat layer to form an embossed micro-structured overcoat layer and curing the embossed micro-structured overcoat layer to form the micro-structured overcoat layer, such that the micro-structured overcoat layer reduces the amount of noise.

A printer detects malfunctioning ejectors during printing of three-dimensional objects or two-dimensional printed matter. The printer operates the printhead or printheads in the printer to form convex drops of material on a substrate. A camera is positioned to minimize light reflections from the substrate into the camera. The camera is configured to generate image data of the light reflected from the substrate and specularly from the convex drops on the substrate. A controller analyzes the image data to identify malfunctioning inkjets.

An apparatus detects inoperative inkjets in a printhead. The apparatus includes a rotating member having a light transmitting surface layer onto which material is ejected by the printhead. A light source directs light into an edge of the light transmitting surface layer at a position on the circumferential perimeter of the surface layer and an optical sensor generates image data of the surface of the surface layer of the rotating member. Inoperative inkjets are detected with reference to the image data of the surface of the surface layer of the rotating member.

A system is disclosed for measuring the crystallization of crystalline-amorphous mixtures. The system includes a sample holder. and a heating apparatus to melt a ink composition and to keep the melted ink composition at a first specified temperature for a first period of time. The system includes a cooling apparatus to receive the melted ink composition, to cool the melted ink composition and to maintain the cooled ink composition at a second specified temperature. The system includes a microscope and a video recording device to capture images of the cooled ink composition for a second period of time A video processing computer includes a memory, a processor and software instructions and the software instructions causes the computer to extract crystallization parameters about the cooled ink composition from the captured images. The crystallization parameters identify fast solidifying crystalline inks that have a short time duration from onset of crystallization until crystallization.

A method of operating a printer includes operating an actuator with a controller to move a printhead array during a print job. The controller operates a first subset of inkjets in the printhead array to print to a first print medium during the job and moves a first inkjet in the printhead array over a second print medium while removing a second inkjet that was over the first print medium from being over the second print medium. The controller uses the inkjets that are over the second print medium, including the first inkjet but not the second inkjet, to form a printed image on the second print medium.

System and method for printhead translation to improve printhead reliability

An apparatus detects inoperative inkjets in a printhead. The apparatus includes a rotating member having a light transmitting surface layer onto which material is ejected by the printhead. A light source directs light into the edge of the light transmitting surface layer and an optical sensor generates image data of the surface of the surface layer of the rotating member. Inoperative inkjets are detected with reference to the image data of the surface of the surface layer of the rotating member.

An apparatus detects inoperative ejectors during printing of three-dimensional objects. The apparatus operates the printhead or printheads in the printer to form test pattern on a substrate. A pneumatic sensor directs a pneumatic stream towards substrate and measures the pneumatic impedance. The impedance differences between area where the test pattern is formed and bare areas are analyzed to identify inoperative inkjets.

An inkjet printer is configured to reduce the settling of magnetic particles in magnetic ink. The inkjet printer is configured to eject magnetic ink and black ink in areas where the corresponding image data only has black ink pixels. The printing of the magnetic ink in the black ink areas helps prevent the magnetic particles in the magnetic ink from settling.
