A system and method for managing soft reserve space within a database system including fast solid state storage devices (SSDs) and traditional hard drive storage device (HDDs). The system and method monitors actual spool use within the database system and dynamically modifies the soft-reserve space as a percentage of total storage space in response to changes in spool use.

A system and method for allocating storage devices within a database system including fast solid state storage devices (SSDs) and traditional hard drive storage device (HDDs). The method repetitively collects temperature and queue depth data for each storage device, and determines from the collected data points a service time for each storage device. The method then selects, in response to an allocation request, a storage device having a minimum total wait time determined from the current queue depth and service time for each storage device.

System and method for allocating resources in a mixed SSD and HDD storage environment

Apparatus, systems, and methods may operate to classify storage locations in a storage medium according to at least three response time grades, to classify data to be stored in the storage locations according to at least three access frequency grades, and to migrate the data between the storage locations according to a predicted access frequency assigned to preemptive allocations of some of the storage locations, based on the response time grade and the access frequency grade associated with the data prior to migration. The frequency with which data is accessed within the system may be periodically monitored and a corresponding access frequency quantifier assigned to the data is updated accordingly. The data access frequency quantifier may be associated with a storage device zone speed quality rating. The association between data access frequency quantifiers and the storage device zone speed quality ratings may be made in a hierarchical association such that quantifiable differentials may be ascertained between a particular access frequency quantifier and a storage device zone speed quality rating. In this manner, when no storage zone having a speed quality rating that is associated with data having a particular access frequency quantifier is available for storage of the data, a storage zone having a speed quality rating more proximate the speed quality rating associated with the access frequency quantifier may be identified for migration.
