An air disc brake for a road vehicle is proposed, having a mechanism for causing retraction of the brake pads when the brakes are no longer applied, to avoid parasitic drag caused by continued contact of the brake pads against the brake disc. The proposed mechanism includes a pin located in a fixed position relative to one brake pad, and extending through an aperture in the other brake pad. A coil spring is supported on the pin, and pushes the brake pads apart. Where the pin extends through the aperture the extent of the pin provides an indication of the wear state of the pads and disc, which is visible through apertures in the wheel rim.

Air disc brake for a road vehicle

An adjuster for an air disc brake includes an over-torque clutch arrangement that includes an adjuster drive plate having ramped detents, and a ball-carrying plate having pockets for retaining ball bearings. Ball bearings are carried and retained in the ball-carrying plate, and transmit rotation between the adjuster drive plate and the ball-carrying plate below a torque threshold. Above a torque threshold, the balls move axially away from the adjuster drive plate against the force of a spring, and ride up the ramped detents. Above the torque threshold, rotation is not transmitted.

Air disc brake adjuster mechanism

Sealing means are disclosed for preventing the ingress of water and dirt between a brake caliper and the carrier guide pin. At the end of the guide pin facing away from the brake carrier, a retaining clip holds a sealing bead of a sealing boot at least partially within an axial bore of the guide pin. At the end of the guide pin which faces towards the carrier, a sealing boot is provided seated on a ring which in turn is attached to the caliper. The other end of the sealing boot is attached to the guide pin, in a space between the guide pin and the ring. The sealing means at either end are compact, and provide effective sealing where there is not enough space to provide known sealing means.

Sealing arrangement for a sliding caliper

A disc brake having a caliper, a housing bore, a guide insert, and a piston. The housing bore extends inboard from an outboard face of a housing portion of the caliper. The guide insert may have an inner guide bore and may be mounted within the housing bore. The piston may be slideable within the inner guide bore relative to the guide insert so as to urge a brake pad towards a rotor.

Disc brake

A disc brake assembly arranged to be mounted over a rotor. The disc brake assembly includes first and second brake pads, a caliper having an opening for receiving the first and second brake pads, and a spring member for retaining the pads within the caliper. The spring member has a pad alignment feature arranged to prevent the spring member from being properly assembled on the caliper when one or more of the brake pads is inserted with its friction material facing away from a rotor receiving region of the caliper.

Disc brake assembly

A method of determining if any usable life remains in a brake component of a brake, the method comprising the steps of using a processor to determine a total number of brake events, and using a processor to determine from the total number of brake events if any usable life remains in the brake component.

Method of determining usable life of a brake component

An adjuster system for adjusting the position of a brake pad relative to a brake disc so as to maintain a suitable running clearance between the pad and disc in a disc brake. The system comprises a manual rewind apparatus to reset the position of the brake pad when replacement thereof is required. The manual rewind apparatus has a transmission path extending from a rewind tool engaging portion to a brake pad engaging portion of the system. The manual rewind apparatus is configured such that when a rewind torque above a pre-determined torque is applied to the transmission path by a rewind tool no damage is caused to components along the transmission path.

Adjuster system

A disc brake assembly includes a brake pad having a first pad abutment spaced from a second pad abutment and a third pad abutment positioned between the first pad abutment and the second pad abutment. An actuator is operable to apply a force to the brake pad to apply the brake. The disc brake assembly has a first reaction abutment facing the first pad abutment, a second reaction abutment facing the second pad abutment, and a third reaction abutment facing the third pad abutment. The first, second and third pad abutments are operable to transfer brake pad drag torque to the first, second and third reaction abutments respectively. The disc brake is configured such that under no load conditions with the third pad abutment engaging the third reaction abutment, the first pad abutment is spaced from the first reaction abutment.

Brake assembly

The present invention provides a disc brake caliper. The disc brake caliper has a housing and a piston for moving a friction element into contact with a rotor. A yoke is provided for at least partially guiding the piston, and the yoke is positioned within the housing and moveable relative to the housing. A guide member along which the yoke is slideable is provided, and the guide member is a component separate to the yoke and the housing, and is mounted to the housing.

Disc brake caliper

A retaining formation defined on a brake lever of an air disc brake includes a push fit/snap fit connection for releasably securing a push rod to a brake lever. The retaining formation can include a pinned connection and a ball and socket joint, and a main axis of the pinned connection is coincident with a center of rotation of the ball and socket joint. The retaining formation can include a concave formation on one of the push rod and the brake lever and a corresponding convex formation on the other of the push rod and the brake lever. The concave formation at least partially surrounds the convex formation to prevent axial separation of the push rod and the brake lever. A method of assembling a brake subassembly includes the steps of assembling a push rod and a brake lever including a retaining formation such that at least a portion of the retaining formation deforms during assembly and resiles when the push rod is assembled to the brake lever to provide a snap fit connection therebetween. Another method of manufacturing a retaining formation includes the steps of providing one of a push rod and a brake lever with a concave formation, providing the other of the push rod and the brake lever with a convex formation able to receive the concave formation, assembling the concave formation and the convex formation, mechanically working the one of the push rod and the brake lever with the concave formation such that the concave formation at least partially surrounds the convex formation to prevent axial separation of the push rod and the brake lever.

Retaining formation

A disc brake includes a brake disc, a sliding caliper, a single piston, and a brake pad carrier comprising a leading part and a trailing part. The brake pad carrier includes mounting features for securing the brake pad carrier to an associated structure of a vehicle. The mounting features define a mounting side and a non-mounting side of the brake. A mounting side brake pad comprises mounting side friction material and a non-mounting side brake pad comprising non-mounting side friction material. The center of pressure of the non-mounting side friction material is circumferentially aligned with the piston and the center of pressure of the mounting side friction material is offset in relation to the piston towards the leading part of the brake pad carrier.

A brake caliper has a brake pad having a backplate with a friction material attached to one side and a loading face on an opposite side. The caliper further includes a piston that applies a force to the loading face. The brake pad is releasably attached to the piston, thereby eliminating a separate brake pad retaining structure in the caliper.

Brake caliper

A co-axial wear adjuster and wear sensor for a brake caliper includes a sleeve having an external tooth form engageable with a toothed adjustment wheel of a brake tappet. The sleeve rotates with the tappet and is threaded to engage a relatively non-rotatable, but axially movable, bolt. A wear sensor is partly within the sleeve and has a plunger operably engaged with the bolt. The bolt may be tubular to carry a screw-threaded head whereby a position of the plunger may be set.

Disc brake wear adjuster

An actuating lever of a brake caliper of a vehicle includes a cam surface operable against a single tappet and reacting against a caliper bridge. The actuating lever includes a wear adjuster arm which exerts a turning moment on the actuating lever. The turning moment is resisted by a small stub axle pivotable in a plain bearing of the brake caliper.

Disc brake operating mechanism

A caliper for a fixed twin rotor disc brake includes a relatively fixed body, two yokes movable axially with respect to the body, formations defined on the yokes for receiving four brake pads for respective application to rotor sides, and an actuator adapted to urge the yokes relatively axially. One of the yokes is operable to urge two of the four brake pads in a first axial direction, the other of the yokes is operable to urge the other two of the four brake pads in a second, opposite axial direction. The four brake pads are positioned on a first side of the actuator in the first axial direction.
