The present disclosure is directed to methods and apparatus for locating luminaires within a lighting system where multiple luminaires are located on a grid of DC power rails. The AC signal generator connects to each DC power rail and transmits an AC signal along each DC power rail in turn to luminaires that each compute their distance from the generator based upon the AC signal. The AC signal generator may similarly transmit and receive data communications with luminaires across DC power rails.

System and method for commissioning lighting using sound

A method determines the relative locations of wirelessly controllable service device nodes and switching control nodes within a building. At least some of the service device nodes are located in different rooms of the building and should be allocated to switching control nodes on a room-specific basis. Wireless communication is established between the nodes to determine relative spatial positions of selected nodes using received signal strength indication (RSSI) values indicative of a distance of separation between two communicating nodes. The service device nodes are then grouped into two or more groups, a first group corresponding to service device nodes in one room and a second group corresponding to service device nodes in a second room, based on spatial distribution of the service device nodes as indicated by the RSSI values. The service device nodes of each group are then allocated to at least one associated switching control node.

Grouping wireless lighting nodes according to a building room layout

A computer algorithm () employing decision trees in order to assign wireless communication nodes (--) in a derived spatial arrangement. In a first embodiment, the algorithm () assigns nodes to an array of positions corresponding to the positions of luminaires (-) in a lighting array () to enable the lighting array () to be commissioned automatically. In a second embodiment, the algorithm () assigns nodes to control groups (-) such that the member nodes of a particular control group (-) may be controlled by a single switch or sensor (-). The use of decision trees allows the final assignment of nodes to be delayed until more information has been taken into account, thus, the algorithm () is able to select the best overall configuration.

A computer algorithm for grouping a derived spatial arrangement of wireless communication nodes. The wireless communication nodes form a wireless communication network and are configured to control the operation of luminaires in a lighting array. The position of each node in the communication network corresponds to the position of a particular luminaire in the lighting array. The algorithm divides the arrangement of nodes into a plurality of spatial groups, each of which is defined by a line which joins the group's member nodes together. The groups are ranked according to their statistical attributes and a number of groups are selected as control groups, such that the member nodes, and hence luminaires, of each control group may be controlled by a single switch or sensor.

Using position for node grouping

A method for matching an actual device in a wireless network to a corresponding device indicated in a plan of such devices is provided. The method is suitable for initiating the commissioning process for a lighting control network or an automated home network and it enables the program controlling the system to establish a number of reference nodes, with respect to which the coordinates of the rest of the nodes in the network are established, without the engineer having to manually enter the identification details of the reference nodes in the computer system. The method includes identifying a device in the plan having unique characteristics compared to the other devices in the plan, receiving data comprising the characteristics of the actual device from the wireless network, and in response to the characteristics of the actual device including the unique characteristics, matching the physical device with the identified device.

Locating reference nodes for positioning devices in a wireless network

A communications system is described wherein consensual push of services from radio beacons () to a user's portable device () is enabled. The consent process comprises a user registering the portable device () at a registration beacon () to consent to data delivery from other relevant beacons () in a network. The registration beacon () has a broadcast range which is constrained within, and highlighted to a user as, an indicated interaction zone (). The range is preferably constrained and highlighted using electromagnetic shielding (), or by using a directional antenna, or a combination of both. In use, the user must position their portable device () within the indicated interaction zone () to register for service delivery.

Method and apparatus for indicating the location of an object

The invention provides a method for installing a positioning system, the positioning system comprising two or more base stations (BSto BS), and comprises the steps of; collocating the base stations (BSto BS); quantifying any lack of synchronization between the clocks of the base stations; relocating one or more of the base stations (BS' to BS&#x2032;) to their fixed, operational positions and measuring the time of flight of a signal from each of the relocated base stations; determining from the time of flight and quantified lack of synchronization data the relative separation of the base stations (BS, BS&#x2032; to BS&#x2032;) and hence the configuration of the installed positioning system, and recording the configuration of the installed positioning system. Data defining the configuration of the system can be relayed to a mobile transceiver in the vicinity of the installed positioning system and, along with time of flight measurements of signals emitted by the individual base stations, and data quantifying any real time lack of synchronization of the clocks of the base stations, can be used by the transceiver to position itself within the geographical area defined by the positioning system.

A portable color sampling device () facilitates comparison of a color sampled from an object using an optical sensor () with a database () of stored colors. The database () of stored colors includes a merchandise database of articles for sale, and an indication of the location of those articles, including an indication of some or all of retailer identity, store location, in-store location, article description or product ID, class of article and the like. A user points the color sampling device at an article to be sampled, and a color definition data file is generated for transmission to a database of articles. The database returns to the sampling device a list of merchandise that matches the sampled color or colors and any other matching criteria such as class of article, product code, and geographic proximity.
