The present invention provides a cellular communication system that includes a central radio pool/traffic router (CRP/TR) that sends control and traffic signals over fiber optic transmission links that connect the CRP/TR with base stations of the cellular communication system. The high bandwidth capacity of each fiber link allows a large band of radio frequencies representing many radio channels to pass between the CRP/TR and individual base stations. Radio resources can be shared by all base stations in the cellular communication system, dynamically, when and where needed, to meet access demands throughout the system. The CRP/TR includes low-powered digital and/or analog radios and also switching and modulation means used to convey signals between the radios and various base stations within the system.

An improved plain old telephone service (POTS) line card that may be directly connected to a customer line that is also connected to a digital subscriber line access module. A second order filter is added to the front end of the POTS line card in order to attenuate XDSL signals and to lower its amplitude. A new digital signal processor (DSP) includes further low pass filtering functions, gain compensation, termination impedance compensation and balance network compensation to provide the proper balanced network as is known in current POTS cards but not provided in current XDSL services. This card may also be used alone, without a XDSL equipped line.

A calling and called telecommunications station are each connected to a packet access network. The packet access network under the control of a server system, determines whether an originating call should be routed via a core packet network, such as the Internet, or a Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). If the expected delay of packets through the core packet network is excessive, then the call will be connected through the Public Switched Telephone Network. If, during the course of a call, the packet delay becomes excessive, and causes the quality of voice transmission to be below acceptable standards, the call is switched from the packet network to the Public Switched Telephone Network. Advantageously, as many calls as can be handled by the packet network are switched through that network, thus resulting in substantial savings to the customer. Advantageously, the embedded PSTN can be used productively to handle overflows from the core packet network. Advantageously, the quality of voice calls through the core packet network can be maintained by re-routing existing calls through the PSTN when necessary.

The response signal includes characteristic data relating to the selected responding unit that includes information relating to situs of the selected responding unit. The method includes steps of: (a) providing a managing facility and responding units; (b) effecting initial contact among the managing facility and selected responding units using wireless data communication; and (c) communicating a responsive signal by a responding unit to the managing facility using wireless data communication.

A system and method that uses the flexible bandwidth of a data network in order to provide more flexible services to remote line units comprises a telephone switch configured to provide telephony service to a wireline terminal and an access network head end connected via circuit switch transmission facilities to the telephone switch and configured to manage bearer channels in a data network. The system also includes a data network carrying the bearer channels and a line unit separate from the telephone switch connected to the data network and to the wireline terminals configured to interface wireline terminals to one of the bearer channels. The access network head end reserves a predetermined bandwidth through the network and allocates a portion of the bandwidth to each of the line units. The amount of bandwidth allocated to each line unit is variable.

System and method for variable bandwidth transmission facilities between a local telephone switch and a remote line unit

A method and apparatus for an automobile security system. A GPS Receiver is used to measure the location of an automobile, and after the user has left the car, to measure the location of the user. The location of the car when it is parked is recorded in the GPS Receiver System. When the user is more than a pre-determined distance from the car, as determined by a GPS location measurement that is compared with the stored GPS location, the security system is activated and the car is locked. Subsequently, when the user comes within a second pre-determined distance of the car, the security system is deactivated, and the car is unlocked. Advantageously, both the locking and unlocking is accomplished without forcing the user to perform any manual act. Advantageously, the user can get directions from the GPS Receiver to help locate the car.

Automobile security alarm systems

Telephone calls are handed off from a wireless network to a wireline network under the control of a subscriber. When at a given location, the subscriber enters the directory number of the wireline terminal (typically the closest) to which a future wireless call is to be transferred. The entered directory number is then stored in memory in the subscriber's wireless terminal with the current location of the subscriber as determined by a satellite-based global positioning system (GPS) for future use. If the subscriber wants to transfer a call to a wireline terminal, the subscriber selects a transfer handoff key on the subscriber's wireless terminal. After the subscriber's location is determined using the GPS, it is then determined if a directory number (DN) of a designated wireline terminal has previously been entered and stored in memory for the subscriber's present location. If so, the call is transferred to the designated wireline terminal using the local cellular network and the wireless call is terminated. If the DN of a wireline terminal associated with the subscriber's present location has not previously been entered, the wireless call is allowed to continue. Automatic call forwarding to a designated wireline terminal is also provided for in the event of a weak received signal link using a table of previously entered wireline terminal DN's. In both manual and automatic transfer of a wireless call, the subscriber must pick up the ringing wireline terminal to complete call transfer.

Voice mail, email, fax and personal calendar systems are integrated allowing for the automatic updating of voice mail and email responses to received telephone calls and emails indicating that the receiver of the telephone call/email is out of the office, temporarily unavailable, etc. For received telephone calls, a determination is made as to whether the call was received during or outside of normal working hours, and if the person receiving the call is still engaged beyond a previous entered time period for providing an appropriate message to the caller. The determination is also made as to whether the received call is an &ldquo;inside&rdquo; or &ldquo;outside&rdquo; call, e.g., originating within or outside of the office or organization being called, and a predetermined response is provided depending upon where the call originated. In response to an incoming fax, the number of the fax transmitter is stored and used to provide a return fax response with a predetermined message from the calendar server of the person receiving the call. Provision is made for updating the user status at any time and, thus, automatically changing the outgoing voice mail, email or fax message.

The wireless telephone system for accessing multiple stations via a single telephone number provides a single telephone number for a group of subscribers who are equipped with a plurality of stations, including at least one mobile subscriber station, to thereby enable call connections to be established to any one of the mobile subscriber stations in the group when the other stations in the group are in an idle state. A plurality of mobile subscriber stations are registered as members of a group that is assigned a single telephone number. The wireless communication system tracks the present location of the plurality of mobile subscriber stations and their present busy/idle status. If a subscriber at one of the plurality of mobile subscriber stations goes off-hook to originate a call connection, the wireless communication system determines whether any other members of the group are presently engaged in an active call connection using the assigned single telephone number. If not, the call connection proceeds as usual. If the single telephone number is presently in use, the wireless communication system can provide one of a number of possible call processing options to indicate the present use of the single telephone number. Thus, the time-sharing of the single telephone number among a plurality of individuals in a group conserves telephone numbers and results in service conflicts only if multiple service requests are concurrently received. By the use of traffic engineering criteria, the instances of such service conflicts can be kept to a minimum.
