An automotive vehicle includes at least one actuator configured to control vehicle steering, shifting, acceleration, or braking, at least one sensor configured to provide signals indicative of road geometry in the vicinity of the vehicle, and a controller in communication with the sensor and the actuator. The controller is configured to selectively control the actuator in an autonomous driving mode based on signals from the sensor. The controller is configured to automatically determine a first time parameter based on a distance to a merge location between a current driving lane of the vehicle and a target lane adjacent the current driving lane in response to signals from the sensor, to automatically determine a second time parameter based on a calculated merge completion time, and to automatically discontinue autonomous control of the actuator based on a difference between the first time parameter and the second time parameter.

System and method for control of an autonomous vehicle

An automotive vehicle includes at least one actuator configured to control vehicle steering, at least one sensor configured to detect a profile of a driving surface proximate the vehicle, and at least one controller in communication with the actuator and the sensor. The controller is configured to identify a plurality of potential paths within a driveable lane, determine at least one road profile parameter for each respective potential path, identify a desired path based on a comparison of the respective road profile parameters for the plurality of potential paths, and control the actuator to steer the vehicle according to the desired path.

The vehicle wireless unit and method may be used to temporarily halt a non-interrupted data flow between the vehicle wireless unit and a cellular network over a first cellular link according to a first radio access technology (RAT), which purposely causes the vehicle wireless unit to enter an idle mode and results in the first cellular link being released. Once the first cellular link is released, the vehicle wireless unit and method may search for and, if found, establish a second cellular link with the cellular network according to a higher-order radio access technology (RAT). The vehicle wireless unit and method may be particularly useful with autonomous or semi-autonomous vehicles.

Methods and systems for vehicle sensor compensation are provided. A sensor is configured to at least facilitating obtaining sensor data pertaining to an object in proximity to the vehicle. The sensor data includes a measured azimuth angle value for the object. A processor is coupled to the sensor. The processor is coupled to the sensor, and is configured to at least facilitate estimating a misalignment angle for the sensor using the sensor data and generating a correction factor for the measured azimuth angle value using the misalignment angle.

Methods and systems are provided for estimating a characteristic of a surface of a road on which a vehicle is travelling is provided. The system comprises a sensor and a processor. The sensor is configured to measure information pertaining to a wheel slip for one or more wheels of the vehicle after a torque is applied. The processor is coupled to the sensor, and is configured to at least facilitate applying the torque for the one or more wheels of the vehicle, and estimating the characteristic of the surface of the road based at least in part on the wheel slip after the torque is applied and the torque.

According to one aspect, a distance determination system for a vehicle includes an apparatus for generating and displaying a pattern generated by a holographic encoded medium in operable communication with an actuator and in communication with an electromagnetic radiation source configured to produce coherent electromagnetic waves. The distance determination system also includes an imager and a distance determination module in communication with the imager. The imager is configured to acquire image data representative of a field of view from the vehicle. The distance determination module is configured to locate at least one feature of the pattern in the image data and determine an estimated distance between the vehicle and the at least one feature based at least in part on a known position of the apparatus, a known position of the imager, and a layout of the pattern.

Methods and systems are disclosed for authorizing operation of an electric vehicle that is being charged at a charging station. A computer can determine whether predefined criteria relating to the electric vehicle have been satisfied, and, if so, communicates a virtual key to the electric vehicle. The virtual key allows the electric vehicle to be operated in a limited operating mode that defines constraints on operating the vehicle. The virtual key allows the electric vehicle to be operated in the limited operating mode without a physical key or fob being present at the electric vehicle. The electric vehicle includes a processor configured to receive the virtual key and to control operation of the electric vehicle according to the constraints defined by the virtual key.

Methods and systems are provided for implementing a lane control feature for vehicles having a passenger side, a driver side, one or more wheels on the passenger side, and one or more wheels on the driver side. A sensor is configured to obtain information pertaining to operation of a vehicle with respect to a lane of a roadway. The processor is coupled to the sensor, and is configured to at least facilitate determining, using the information, whether the lane control feature is activated, and providing differential torque between one or more driver side wheels and one or more passenger side wheels when the lane control feature is activated.

Methods, systems, and vehicles are provided for controlling active safety functionality for a vehicle. The active safety functionality provides an action during a drive cycle of the vehicle based on a predetermined threshold. Data pertaining to driving conditions, usage conditions of the vehicle, or both, is obtained for a drive cycle of the vehicle. A risk factor grade is calculated using the data. The risk factor grade corresponds to a level of situational risk for the drive cycle. The predetermined threshold of the active safety system is adjusted based on the risk factor grade.

Safety systems and methods are provided for use in a vehicle with a closure that defines a pivoting range when open. The safety system includes a sensor configured to collect data associated with an object in a target zone at least partially surrounding the vehicle; and a processor coupled to the sensors and configured to selectively operate in a first mode and a second mode based on a vehicle characteristic. The processor is configured to, in the first mode, detect the object and generate a first warning based on the object; and in the second mode, detect the object and determine a collision threat between the object and the pivoting range of the closure, and generate a second warning based on the collision threat.

A vehicle collision warning system and method may be used to detect a potential or impending collision with another vehicle and to send a corresponding warning to the driver. In an exemplary embodiment, the collision warning system uses one or more target vehicle readings (e.g., a relative velocity reading (&#x394;v), a target vehicle acceleration reading (a), and a relative distance reading or range (&#x394;d)) to solve a unified collision warning algorithm. If the unified collision warning algorithm determines that there is a potential collision with the target vehicle, then the system sends a corresponding warning to the driver.

A vehicle has a safety system including at least one object sensor to detect a distance from an object in a path of the vehicle and the speed and acceleration of the object. The sensor data is input into a control to determine a desired braking judgment line and a steering judgment line between the vehicle and the object. The safety system then compares the vehicle and object acceleration. Following, the safety system calculates a judgment line between the object and the vehicle based upon equations for the determined scenario. The judgment line is then used to determine a warning distance and warn a vehicle operator.
