A swivel adapter for an inlet conduit to an underground storage includes two relatively rotatable components. The relative rotation between the components prevents sealing loss between the adapter and the inlet conduit when the adapter is subjected to torque.

A breakaway unit which is adapted for mounting in a fuel hose between a fuel dispenser and nozzle. The breakaway unit comprises male and female couplers which are normally locked in an assembled position, but which are releasable at a separation force produced when a vehicle drives away from the dispenser with the nozzle lodged in its fuel tank. The couplers include fuel passages which are adapted for connection to a fuel hose in series flow relation and valves disposed in the fuel passages and automatically shiftable from an open to a closed position when the couplers are separated. Fixed abutment lugs are formed on one of the couplers and are shaped to engage force fingers carried by the other coupler. Moveable lugs having ramped abutment surfaces are located on the fingers and engage ramped surfaces on the fixed abutment lugs to lock the couplers together. A sleeve is adjustably mounted on the force fingers to control the separation of the couplers. In the assembled position, the sleeve prevents separation of the force fingers and fixed lugs. A spring is disposed adjacent to the sleeve. When a separation force is applied to the unit, the spring compresses, displacing the sleeve away from the force fingers, allowing the fingers to flex outwardly away from the lugs to decouple the unit. The spring also absorbs line shock forces applied to the breakaway unit in order to limit the effects of these forces on the remaining components in the unit.

A fluid dispensing nozzle construction, a diaphragm subassembly therefor and methods of making the same are provided, the diaphragm subassembly comprising a pin, a diaphragm support carried by the pin, a diaphragm, and a diaphragm retainer securing the diaphragm to the pin with the diaphragm being disposed and sandwiched between the diaphragm retainer and the diaphragm suppport, the diaphragm subassembly having structure requiring the descrution of at least one part of the diaphragm subassembly when the diaphragm subassembly has the parts thereof disassembled.

An information center for gasoline dispensing nozzles utilizes a molded plastic disc having a top message surface and a central body portion which extends through a snug-fitting scuff guard of a gasoline nozzle. A flange about the lower surface of the disc entraps the disc between the scuff guard and the nozzle so that the disc is retained easily, without the need for fasteners or tools. Informative indicia is applied to the top exposed surface of the disc by means of pressure sensitive labels, silk screen printing, molded letters and logos, and the like.

An automatic shut-off nozzle has a first diaphragm responsive to the liquid in the tank being filled reaching a predetermined level to automatically stop flow through the nozzle. Flow also is automatically stopped when a second diaphragm responds to inactivation of a pump supplying the liquid to the nozzle. When a venturi poppet valve is located downstream from a main poppet valve in the nozzle, the venturi poppet valve has a bleed passage extending therethrough to enable the pressure upstream thereof and acting on the second diaphragm to be reduced to zero the pump is inactivated.

A linkage assembly for linearly moving a valve of a coupler between its open and closed positions has a yoke pivotally connected to a first link which is fixed to a rotary shaft so that the yoke rotates about the axis of the rotary shaft during a predetermined angular rotation of the rotary shaft. The yoke and a second link, which is pivotally connected to the valve, are in bearing engagement during the predetermined angular rotation. During a portion of the predetermined angular rotation, the center of the bearing surface of the second link is maintained in alignment with the axis of rotation of the shaft by a pin on the second link riding in an arcuate channel fixed to the shaft for rotation therewith.

A fluid dispensing nozzle has a first venturi created between a seat ring and a movable, resiliently biased poppet valve. The resistance of the movable poppet valve is decreased as the flow rate increases by a second venturi effect, which reduces the pressure in a chamber formed within the movable poppet valve.

An automatic nozzle having a spout which is releasably connected to the body of the nozzle in a manner so that it may be forceably removed therefrom without damage to the connecting means as well as the spout.

A dry break coupler of a coupling device has an adapter connected thereto in an arrangement in which the adapter must be disposed within the coupler in the position in which it is locked to the coupler before a rotatable shaft can be rotated to initially lock the adapter to the coupler. The coupler has a poppet valve, which opens a valve in a passage in the adapter when the poppet valve is opened to provide communication therebetween, movable to its open position by the rotatable shaft only after the adapter has been locked to the coupler. The adapter cannot be released from the coupler until after the poppet valve has been moved from its open position to its closed position by rotation of the rotatable shaft in the opposite direction.
