The instant disclosure generally relates to lubricating compositions having an oil of lubricating viscosity, an ashless phosphorus-containing antiwear agent an alkaline earth metal detergent, an ashless antioxidant, and an ashless dispersant where the lubricating compositions are substantially free of zinc and methods of lubricating an engine with such lubricating compositions. The instant lubricating compositions are useful as alternative lubricating compositions the reduce and/or eliminate zinc to achieve a desired performance goal of the lubricating composition.

A lubricant composition comprising an oil of lubricating viscosity and 0.01 to 5 percent by weight of a substantially sulfur-free alkyl phosphate amine salt, where at least 30 mole percent of the phosphorus atoms are in an alkyl pyrophosphate salt structure, exhibits good antiwear performance. In the phosphate amine salt, at least 80 mole percent of the alkyl groups are typically secondary alkyl groups of 3 to 12 carbon atoms.

The invention provides a lubricating composition comprising a low viscosity base oil and a synergistic mixture of a functionalized ethylene-&#x3b1;-olefin copolymer, a poly(meth)acrylate polymer, and a metal-free anti-wear agent. A lubricant composition comprising an oil of lubricating viscosity and about 0.01 to about 5 percent by weight of a (thio)phosphoric acid salt ('phos-amine salt') of at least one hydrocarbyl amine. The invention is directed to a zinc-free lubricating composition for an internal combustion engine containing a phosphorus anti-wear agent, an ashless antioxidant, and an oxyalkylated phenol compound. The lubricating composition provides wear protection, deposit control, and improved acid control with reduced levels of metal-containing additives.
