An LED driver for an LED lamp, which also comprises an LED load. The LED driver is adapted to connect to an input source at a first and second terminal. The LED driver comprises a switching arrangement configured to enable a controller to control at least a magnitude and phase of the voltage between the first and second terminals. The phase of the voltage between the first and second terminals may be defined to control an amount of power that flows from the input source to power the LED lamp.

An LED driver that is operable with two different types of power source originally designed for a high-intensity discharge lamp. A device for determining a type of a power source for powering a LED lighting unit, wherein one possible type comprises a ballast originally designed for a high intensity discharge lamp and repurposed for use with an LED lighting unit. The power source type determiner monitors at least one electrical parameter of either a load or the power source itself after a power drawn by the load whose characteristic is set to a critical value. A value of the electrical parameter is used to identify a type of the power source. A value of the electrical parameter is the pulse generated by the traditional ballast for gas discharge lamp, which pulse is detected to determine the type of the power source.

Power source type determiner

A circuit is for generating a DC voltage supply from a higher voltage AC signal. A first capacitor (C) is in series between an input () and a first node (N), a first diode (D) is in forward direction between the first node and a DC voltage supply node (Nout), a second capacitor (C) is between the DC voltage supply node and a reference terminal, and a second diode (D) is in forward direction between the reference terminal and the first node. This defines a general charge pump architecture. A third capacitor (C) is then provided between the first node and a second node (N) and a controllable voltage supply () defines the voltage at the second node (N). This adjustable node voltage improves the efficiency of the circuit, in that excess current can be dissipated efficiently, and it can be implemented with a simple circuit.

A control circuit, of a control loop, for a lighting driver. The lighting driver is adapted to controllably connect an electronic ballast to an LED light source or lamp. The control circuit comprises a biasing circuit having an adjustable impedance. A tuning circuit adjusts the impedance of the biasing circuit so as to tune a parameter of a frequency response of the control loop and thereby of the lighting driver.

A lighting device is configured to receive a first voltage signal, and includes: a first circuit coupled to input terminals for receiving the first voltage signal, the first circuit including: rectifying diodes for rectifying the first voltage signal and supplying a second voltage signal, a first capacitor for buffering the second voltage signal, and a second capacitor coupled in parallel to one of the rectifying diodes of the first circuit; a second circuit receiving an input voltage signal, corresponding to the second voltage signal, and converting the input voltage into an output signal; and a light circuit receiving the output signal of the second circuit and including at least one light emitting diode, wherein the first circuit includes a fourth circuit in parallel to the second capacitor, the fourth circuit including at least two fourth circuit diodes and being connected by a fourth capacitor to one of the input terminals.

Lighting device suitable for multiple voltage sources

The present invention provides a lamp driving circuit. When it is used to drive a number of lamps arranged in a hybrid serial-parallel configuration, the lamp driving circuit eliminates the parasitic current in series branch circuits by using an inverse transformer, which makes the current passing each of the lamps in each of the series branch circuits consistent and consequently eliminates the imbalance of each of the lamps.

Lamp driving circuit

In an up-converter supplied by the mains supply and operating in the critical mode, the on-time of the switching element () is modulated so that it is increased in the vicinity of the zero crossings of the mains supply voltage. As a result the THD is lowered.

Circuit arrangement

In a bride circuit comprising a lamp choke that might partially saturate during the ignition of the lamp, at least one of the switches is switched off when the amount of charge displaced through it in forward direction equals a predetermined value. Despite the partial paturation of the lamp choke the amplitude of the ignition voltage is thereby effectively controlled.

A circuit arrangement for supplying a load which comprises a discharge lamp. The circuit includes apparatus for generating a DC voltage and provided with input terminals for connection to a supply voltage source. A rectifier is coupled to the input terminals for rectifying an AC voltage supplied by the supply voltage source. In addition, there are output terminals for connection to the load and a DC-DC converter connected between the rectifier and the output terminals and provided with a first inductor, a first unidirectional element, and a switching element. The output terminals are interconnected by a circuit branch which comprises a series arrangement of an impedance and a first capacitor, which impedance is shunted by a further unidirectional element. As a result, the inrush current which flows immediately after switching-on of the circuit arrangement is limited.

In a self-oscillating bridge circuit, the control of the low switch (6) is derived from the control of the high switch (7) by coupling the control circuitry (SC2) of the low switch to a terminal P in the control circuitry of the high switch by means of a diode (D1). The control of the low switch is improved by incorporating control circuitry (SC3) for rendering the low switch conducting for a short period after the high switch has become non-conducting.

A switched bridge circuit includes a low voltage to high voltage interface which selectively controls an input to a high side switch. A controller compares the voltage across the interface, the state of the high side switch, and the output of the circuit. If hard switching is detected by the controller, it latches the voltage across the interface thus keeping the high side switch on to allow the hard switching to occur. If soft switching is detected, the high side switch is kept off. A source follower is used to drive the high side switch so that the circuit output follows the interface output thereby avoiding oscillation. A falling edge detector for the output of the circuit uses the inherent parasitic capacitance of a high voltage device which also forms a bootstrap diode. When the output drops, the parasitic capacitance feeds a resistance which causes a driver to actuate. A second falling edge detector uses the inherent parasitic capacitance of the level shifter switch which is another high voltage device. When the output drops, the parasitic capacitance turns on a switch. A rising edge detector also uses the inherent capacitance of the low voltage to high voltage interface. A switch is coupled to the circuit output and the low voltage to high voltage interface. When the circuit output rises, the switch actuates.

Level shifter

A circuit arrangement for igniting and operating at least two discharge lamps. the circuit is provided with input terminals (K1,K2) for connection to a supply voltage source and a circuit I (SC, S1, S2) coupled to the input terminals for generating a high-frequency voltage from a supply voltage delivered by the supply voltage source. A load branch B is coupled to the circuit I and comprising a first branch A including first terminals (K3,K3') for accommodating a discharge lamp and a first inductive element L1, and a second branch C shunting the first branch A and comprising further terminals (K4,K4') for accommodating a discharge lamp and a second inductive element L2 which is magnetically coupled to the first inductive element L1. A circuit II limits the voltage across branch A and branch C to a first value during the ignition of the discharge lamps. A circuit III limits the voltage across branch A and branch C to a second value after the ignition of one of the discharge lamps thereby preventing the occurrence of ignition voltages of very high amplitude across the discharge lamp igniting last.
