A ferritic stainless steel alloy is provided which is hot workable and is resistant to thermal cyclic oxidation and scaling at elevated temperatures. The iron-chromium-aluminum alloy contains cerium, lanthanum and other rare earths and is suitable for forming thereon an adherent textured aluminum oxide surface. Also provided are an oxidation resistant catalytic substrate made from the alloy and a method of making the steel article and products having a textured aluminum oxide surface. The method includes steps of heat treating the cold worked steel article to form the adherent textured oxide surface and, optionally, pretreatment heating of the cold worked article before the texture heat treatment.

Producing an iron-chromium-aluminum alloy with an adherent textured

A substantially austenitic stainless steel is provided which is characterized by increased strength resulting from martensite formation upon cold working; the stainless steel consists essentially of, in weight percent, 0.08 max. carbon, 0.25 max. nitrogen, 12 to 15 chromium, 6.5 to 8.5 manganese, about 2 to 3.5 nickel, the sum of manganese and nickel being at least 9.0, and balance iron. The steel is further characterized by having less than 15% ferromagnetic phases in the cast and hot-processed conditions. A method of producing the steel product including hot working the steel alloy to a thickness which allows cold working by an amount equivalent to up to 25% thickness reduction and cold working without an intermediate anneal is also provided.

Work-hardenable substantially austenitic stainless steel and method

A stabilized ferritic stainless steel is wettable by brazing materials used at temperatures of from 2000.degree. F. to 2100.degree. F. The steel consists essentially of, by weight, 10.5% to 13.5% chromium, up to 0.1% carbon, up to 0.05% nitrogen, up to about 0.12% titanium and at least one other stabilizing element from the group consisting of niobium and tantalum in an amount in accordance with the relationship: ##EQU1##

Stabilized ferritic stainless steel with improved brazeability

A ferritic stainless steel alloy is provided which is hot workable and is resistant to thermal cyclic oxidation and scaling at elevated temperatures. The iron-chromium-aluminum alloy contains cerium, lanthanum and other rare earths and is suitable for forming thereon an adherent textured aluminum oxide surface. An oxidation resistant catalytic substrate made from the alloy and a method of making the alloy are also provided.

Iron-chromium-aluminum alloy and article and method therefor

Careful control of chemistry, and in particular niobium, and of annealing temperatures provides a ferritic stainless steel of improved creep strength. Annealing is performed at a temperature of at least 1900.degree. F., and in certain embodiments, at a temperature no higher than 1990.degree. F.
