An apparatus () for monitoring the position of an eye during a laser ablation treatment of the eye is provided. The apparatus includes optic means () for directing an incident light beam () along an optical path () onto the external surface of the eye () so as to illuminate a region of said surface that includes a segment of the limbus of the eye, and for directing back along said optical path (), a return beam () comprising light of said incident beam scattered by said surface region; beam separation means () for separating the return beam () from the incident beam (). The apparatus also includes at least one detector (), having one or more detector segments (), for detecting said return beam (), said detector segment(s) () recording first and second values for light scattered respectively by the sclera and iris in said illuminated region. Movement of said limbal segment, and therefore of the eye (), produces a change in at least one of said first and second values allowing such movement of the eye () to be monitored. A method corresponding to the apparatus is also disclosed.

Fast response eye tracking

Apparatus for effecting harmonic conversion of a laser beam of predetermined frequency, to provide plural harmonic components of the laser beam at frequencies different from the predetermined frequency, includes a housing () defining a hermetically sealed chamber able to be maintained at a pressure below atmospheric pressure. Also provided are port means for evacuating the chamber, and means () defining an optical path for the laser beam and the components thereof through the housing and the chamber. A plurality of individual holders () are arranged for retaining respective frequency conversion crystals at spaced locations in the optical path. The crystals () can be aligned individually and heated within the chamber.

Housing for harmonic generation crystals in solid state laser systems

An apparatus () for scanning a light beam () through a crystal arrangement () that has a first frame member (), a first support member () to support a first optical element () in the first frame member () and a drive mechanism () to rotate the first support member (). The first support member () is rotatably mounted in the first frame member (). The first optical element () is arranged to receive the light beam (). The first optical element () is supported by the first support member () so that the first optical element () is rotatable with the first support member (). The first optical element () is tiltable about a diametral line of the first optical element (), relative to the axis of the light beam () to be scanned through the crystal arrangement (). A frequency conversion apparatus () provides a first crystal set () and a second crystal set (). Each of the first and second crystal sets () has at least one non-linear optical crystal. The first crystal set () receives a beam () of coherent radiation that passes through the first crystal set (). The second crystal set () receives the beam () after it passes through the first crystal set (), and the beam () then passes through the second crystal set (). One of the first and second crystal sets () is aligned for frequency conversion of the beam () in the cold state of that crystal set and the other one of the first and second crystal sets () is aligned for frequency conversion of the beam () in the warm steady state of that other crystal set.
