An orthopaedic prosthetic system includes a plate having one or more flanges and an acetabular shell component. Each flange includes a surface configured to engage a patient's bone. The plate also includes a central ring that engages a lip extending from an outer surface of the shell component. The ring may be mechanically attached to the lip using multiple fasteners. The system may include multiple plates each having a different configuration from other plates, and may also include multiple shell components each having a different configuration from other shell components. Methods for assembling and using the prosthetic system are also disclosed.

Modular acetabular surgical implant assembly

An orthopaedic components, prostheses, and methods for a hip arthroplasty are disclosed. The acetabular prosthetic component includes an outer rim and a cavity defined by an inner wall. The cavity is sized to receive a femoral head of a femoral prosthetic component. The inner wall includes a curved surface extending inwardly from the outer rim to an inner end, and a semi-spherical surface connected to the inner end of the curved surfac. The inner wall is shaped to resist dislocation of the femoral head component from the cavity and permit the femoral head component to articulate over a range of motion.

Acetabular orthopaedic prosthesis and method

A prosthetic component assembly, such as an acetabular cup, includes a shell, a bearing positioner and a bearing. The shell and bearing positioner are configured to facilitate orienting the bearing positioner in multiple orientations relative to the shell and for securing the bearing positioner in a selected orientation of the multiple orientations relative to the shell. The bearing is configured to be received in the bearing positioner at multiple rotational orientations for optimal joint biomechanics. The bearing positioner is selected from among a plurality of lateralized positioners to accommodate the joint anatomy.

A trial implant kit includes a plurality of intermediate components and a plurality of inner components. Each of the plurality of intermediate components has a uniform inner surface, although at least two of the plurality of intermediate components having distinct outer surfaces. Each of the distinct outer surfaces is configured to engage one of a plurality of acetabular shell component geometries. Each of the plurality of inner components has a uniform outer surface portion and a bearing surface, the uniform outer surface portion configured to be received by the uniform inner surface of any of plurality of intermediate components. The bearing surface is configured to engage a femoral head. At least two of plurality of inner components having distinct bearing surface configurations.

Prosthesis implantation method

An acetabular shell for use in a hip prosthesis is provided. The shell includes a body having an inner periphery and a convex outer periphery and defining a cavity of the body. The outer periphery has a first portion defining a hemisphere and a second portion extending from the equator of the first portion in a converging direction. The second portion forms a rim opposed to the equator. The cavity is positioned within the rim.

Modular orthopaedic implant apparatus

A prosthetic component assembly, such as an acetabular cup, includes a shell and a bearing insert or liner. The shell and bearing insert are configured to provide an increased congruency between the shell and the bearing insert thereby decreasing the amount of motion (i.e. micromotion) between the shell and the bearing insert. In one form, increased congruency is achieved through first and second (inner and outer) tapers that are respectively provided on the shell and the bearing insert. The outer taper has first and second outer taper portions. A relationship between the first outer taper portion and the inner provides an essentially congruent fit, while a relationship between the second taper portion and the inner taper provides an interference fit. The relationships between the inner and outer tapers allow the bearing insert to achieve load sharing at a dome of the outer shell as well as at a rim of the shell. The relationships between the tapers also allow relative motion between the shell and the bearing insert to be controlled. Particularly, the relationships between the tapers allow relative motion, or micro-motion, to be uniformly controlled below previous levels reported in the range of 10 micrometers or less between the bearing insert and the shell.

Modular orthopaedic implant apparatus and method

A tray for housing medical devices such as instruments or implants. The tray includes a base having a plurality of pocket-like compartments to accommodate the devices. Individual inner lids are pivotally connected to the base and are each adapted to overlie a compartment in the base. The lids may be individually secured over the compartments or, alternatively, the top of the tray when secured over the base would overlie the lids so as to prevent their opening.

A sterilization container for sterilizing and storing medical instruments includes a base tray and one or more insert trays removably mounted in a cavity defined by the side and bottom walls of the base tray. Insert trays are supported on ribs projecting transversely into the base tray cavity which cooperates with the side walls of the base tray to define a groove which receives a circumferential wall defined on a turned over portion of an insert tray, thereby inhibiting the latter from migrating to the bottom of the base tray. The ribs have lateral side surface to engage the circumferentially extending wall of the insert trays to restrict lateral movement of the insert trays relative to the base tray to that distance which brings the circumferentially extending walls of the base tray into engagement with the lateral surface of one of the ribs.
