A number of &#x3b2;-hemolytic streptococci polynucleotides and polypeptides, particularlypolypeptides and polynucleotides, are described. Two or more of the polypeptides of the invention can be formulated for use as immunogenic compositions. Also disclosed are methods for immunizing against and reducing infection caused by &#x3b2;-hemolytic streptococci.

Polypeptides are disclosed which inhibit the binding of the C5a chemotaxin to polymorphonuclear leukocytes by cleaving a six amino acid peptide from the carboxy-terminus of the C5a chemotaxin. The polypeptides can be isolated from virulent strains of group A streptococci, s. pyogenes, by enzymatic or detergent extraction.
